Our apartment in Catania faces due south. The aircon must struggle in summer but in early Feb it is perfect. The sun is shining and we had breakfast on our terrace: for me it was chocolate croissants from the bakery next door.

We could get used to having breakfast on the terrace in winter. It is lovely and sunny. Bread and butter and marmelade made from Sicilian lemons.

We are in the Grand Harbour Hotel in Valletta. We have had a Full English Breakfast - 2 fried eggs, 2 rashers of bacon, 4 sausages, fried tomatoes, baked beans plus toast and jam. We (or at least I) think this is sensible as our flight is at 1.40 so lunch will be late. Mrs Faz thinks it is too late for lunch and BA will give us afternoon tea. Either way we need to make certain we don't collapse with hunger.

We are already into a routine here in Ferragudo. The nearest café/restaurant is also a pastry shop. There are a couple of dozen pastries to choose from. I have no idea of the names of most of them. Well, I know croissants but for the rest I just point. Tomorrow I'll have pastel de nata.

mini cheddar crackers and water for me this morning. Are you still in Scotland? Shouldn't you be eating porridge? Which reminds me of the Frenchman confronted by porridge for the first time. He said: That looks as if it has been eaten already.

I fried two bananas in butter and sprinkled brown sugar over them. It was sinful.

Baz, I was leaving Scotland. my second breakfast was a fruit salad and a brie and bacon panino, freshly toasted and surprisingly enjoyable, with a peppermint infusion.

So, I'm staying in a no-frills place and breakfast was not available. found a little independent cafe, ordered tea even though it is a coffee place, with a "potato pie" and what we call "escargot" in Switzerland, a type of patisserie that has a doughstrip rolled on itself with a bit of a vanilla between the pieces of strip and some raisins.
When I realised it was a greek place, I ordered a kafe elliniko metrio, but was told there was none left.

When I realised it was a greek place, I ordered a kafe elliniko metrio, but was told there was none left. How can they have none left? It was only breakfast. If it was me I would have sworn at them in Greek. Skilos skata ya matra sou. This got me a startled look at the Greeks take-away down the street.

I had this ^^^ again. Usually Mrs Faz and I share a huge bowl of muesli, fruit and yogurt but I felt like a change this morning. It was blissful eating this from our table on the beach with a view of the bay and an amazingly calm sea. Mrs Faz is happy to have got a photo of a hornbill.

Breakfast was somethig of a fiasco. Mrs Faz ordered muesli and that came swiftly. I waited and waited for my fried eggs with baguette. It turned out they had run out of bread (at breakfast?!?) and someone was going to the bakery to get more. At least it was fresh when it came.
