In October we are going to visit our old haunt in the Lot, mainly staying with friends. We have also arranged to have dinner with one-armed Hugh and the French army veteran Nicole. We anticipate the usual fireworks at the meal.

Jeff, if you have only heard good things about Georgia then I advise you to avoid going to Gori. Stalin was born there.

We are off for a long weekend in the Cotswolds staying with one of Mrs Faz's daughters. It will be a family gathering, celebrating her birthday. Depending on which weather site you look at, Saturday (The Day) will either be raining all day or only having a sprinkle inn the late afternoon.

Actually, all of a sudden, several trips are a possibility: Thailand and LAos in January, Ecuador in March and UK and Ireland in May... my head is spinning!

Mrs Faz is off to London for a get-together with old chums. Me? I am going to Bristol today to do a bit of shopping and also to work out where the rerouted bus stops. Tomorrow I have a medical appointment (I am a volunteer to monitor the effect of lowering my hypertension medication). And on Friday I am going to Bath.

Tomorrow we are off to France for 12 days. We'll be visiting the area we used to live in (the Lot/Dordogne) and mainly staying with friends. One interesting thing is that we are staying a night in the house we sold in 2014. Nice people bought it and we saw it two years ago so what they have done to the garden will not be too much of a shock (unless they have vandalised it further). And the night we are staying there we are going to dinner with one-armed Hugh and the former French army tank Nicole. They are so awful that we always come away with wondrous tales.

I am totally trapped for the next two months while a new roof is put on my building. Since my principal room is directly under the roof, it is out of the question that I be away at any time. Also, I am having a new roof window installed while they're doing that. It's only 20,000 euros for all of this, no big deal.

we are enjoying our stay in tbilisi... the 'old' part of town dates from 4th century through the persian period... the 'modern' part dates from 1801 with the russian conquest... with the collapse of the russian empire in world war I georgia managed to assert its independence - which lasted about 3 years before it was taken over by the soviets through 1991... there was a period of vast corruption but they have now worked things out so everything is booming! lots of construction and tourists... every other store is a wine bar, celebrating the fact that apparently wine was originated in georgia about 8000 years ago! they have an indigenous way of making wine as well as literally hundreds of different varieties of wine grapes... they have these huge clay jugs which they bury in the ground and use for both the fermentation and aging... if in the european tradition only the juice of white wines is fermented and then aged (or not) in barrels and red wines have only the skins with the juice for the fermentation period, here they press the grapes, both red and white, and stick everything in the kvevri (the buried amphora), seeds, skins, twigs, etc.
we tasted the same grape treated in both methods... while we are red wine types we found (so far) that both reds were innocuous at best... the european style whites were also blah but some of the kvevri fermented and aged whites were interesting - one was kind of like a dry sherry...
