It's not until next March, but we are going on a diving trip to Socorro Island, off the coast of Mexico. We have been putting off booking anything for months due to renovations/my feet/my parents, and it feels wonderful to have something definite in the works again.
And it's inspiring me to book something else for January, too. Where in sub-Saharan Africa is good to visit in January?

The Namib, the days are long, and being low season there are/were big discounts on vehicle hire and accommodation. Of course it will be hot, and away from the desert humid but it is the time of the year when the wildlife is best seen in the open countryside. In winter it disperses into the wild and your best option is a park or reserve e.g. Etosha. In summer it has to come to water and that means large concentrations in the handful of places that still have water.
If the rains have come, the flowers should be starting to bloom.
I have visited during most seasons and I think summer is the best, I suspect that it is better to go in late January/start February, which is why we did.
Avoid the Christmas Holiday season like the plague. I am not sure exactly when the school holidays end, but they may wipe out the first week or maybe two of January.

FWIW I have read that bird watching is best during the rains i.e. summer but I think for January they would still be in the east, so that would be the Kalahari or Caprivi Strip.

On Thursday I am going to Bath. I am attending a lecture on 16th century Christmas (so work related though Dyrham Park where we work is 17th century; probably little difference). I'll also be able to look round the Bath Christmas market.

Sunday I am off for a week in NYC!! Finally I am excited about this. A bit nervous as this will be my first flight since my DVT 15 months ago, but the doc assured me if I walk a lot and take baby aspirin and drink a lot water I should be fine. Yippeee!!

Yes it is, but no it's not. They're not coming. It's the two of us, with some friends who we'll meet up with. They were all very young and none of them have expressed an interest in going back, even for a visit. The girls remember virtually nothing of it and my lad, only a little.
