On Friday we fly to Athens. We'll take the hotel transport for the 20 minute drive to the port of Rafina. The Avra hotel is right by the harbour. We'll have a nice waterside dinner then on Saturday take the 7.30 ferry to Andros. We are staying in the Chora, the small capital: www.exodos24.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/andros_5.jpg?x84258The town is built on a promontory with beaches to either side. Andros is not a touristed island (except for the village of Batsi). The Chora in particular has been protected from development by the rich ship owners who have their summer mansions there. I'll post more about Andros later. |

I discovered that Bixa Orellana is the botanical name for the aziote tree which came from the Brazilian jungle before making its way to Mexico. From that tree you get annatto which is a bit spicy but is also a food die. In Spain when you have a paella you believe they have been very generous with saffron but in fact the yellow colour of the rice is most often because of annatto which is much cheaper. You tell Bixa that. |

We are off to the Cotswolds in 10 minutes. A grandson is sitting his final school exam and his parents are both away working. We are there to feed and support him. It is just for one night. Then Mrs Faz is going to Birmingham. I say enough travelling is enough so I am going to revel in being in Chipping Sodbury.

We liked Otavalo, not on Saturday when tourist buses come for the market but for the rest of the week. In fact there is a market every day, just not so big as on Saturday. We did wonderful walks from Otavalo.
We also liked Mindo. It is in the cloud forest so expect rain. We stayed at Los Colibris which of course was fantastic for humming birds.

leaving early tomorrow morning for a week in the stubaital in tyrol. we'll be up at over 2000 metres, so i expect no mobile phone reception and definitely no internet. so you all have to get along without me for a while. after that it's a couple of days in munich and then two weeks croatia. i suppose i might check in here every now and than during that part of my vacation ...
