Everything ready. Our little backpacks are standing by the door. I have checked the weather in Kuala Lumpur and tomorrow it is forecast to be a low of 24 and a high of 31 "with a thunderstorm in the area". I don't know why I bother with Accuweather. When we went to Ecuador in 2004 I checked the weather in Quito for a month before we went and every day it forecast rain. When we got there it was dry and somebody we queried said they had had no rain at all.
Anyway I'll be in touch via the little iPad from time to time. And I hope Mark has a good time in Sri Lanka.

Just booked a 25 day trip to Ubekistan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Trying to juggle airfares to get 10 days in the UK but not looking promising. Cheaper to return home and then go back later in the year after the silly season is over.

In Samarkand - TRY to get to the Registan "at dawn" - you will have it to yourself - and it is magical. If you can, find Peter Fleming's "Eastern Approaches" - and read it - the whole thing is wonderful (with Stirling, founding the SAS - and in Libya ) , with Tito is Yugoslavia , but esp for the Russian piece. Which inspired my doing what I just recommended !

welll - it was a zillion years ago. before the Stans were independent etc. Still very Soviet - quite scary to hitchhike in a Russian army jeep back into Samarkand from a "underground" nightclub out in the country - hidden under blankets etc...( long story - we were with 2 members of the TAshkent football team, in Sam, for a big match - I had met them having tea after Registan at dawn.. When we got out of the jeep - about 2am - we ran into an Uzbek wedding taking the bride to her husband's house - all the guests dancing down the street to a band, and the girl sitting in a sort of sedan chair - we were roped right in and danced on - to the house and then until about 4:30... amazing stuff !

We're having trouble finding a time we can get away this winter, but have decided to plan a big trip to Mozambique and Namibia in Oct-Nov.

Finally bought my ticket for Guatemala, although it won't happen until May. Not even really visiting the country -- just going to see a friend in a hellhole. I might see part of the country anyway, but I'm only going to be there for a week.
I got my ticket through Opodo for only about half of the normal fare. Can you imagine that the Paris-Atlanta-Guatemala ticket on Delta was only 170 euros? The return leg was 260 euros, but I think they must have a computer bug. Too bad for them!

I gave up on Opodo but maybe I should try them again. Guatemala is a place I want to visit.

Lots of interesting trips coming up here, as I read through all your posts!
2018 will be an easy year. For the spring vacation I just booked a few days in Amsterdam in April. Summer vacation we will spend in the Swiss alps with friends and hopefully do lots of hiking. I'm quite looking forward though to spend 3 weeks in a remote alpine village.
The autumn vacation is booked also, with the annual 2-week stay in the Netherlands. This time again on my favourite North Sea island Ameland again.

excellent! so you're not going to have to run around London. That's good. No thank goodness. The rules changed on the 28 Feb and those on my passport are able to do things differently and I have a form with a big blue stamp and screeds of indecipherable squiggles which says so.
