Tomorrow we are off to Brighton to stay with my daughter for the weekend. Actually she will be away for some hours and wants someone to drive her 12 year old son to a drum exam. Then we go to London for a couple of days to see my aunt who is over from South Africa. My aunt has just had her 90th birthday and celebrated it by flying to Europe and going on a Rhine cruise. She is a feisty old bird (just what you'd expect a former actress to be).

I had a very short work trip to Salt Lake City last week. HAd all gone well, I might have been able to zip up to see the big Tabernacle or whatever the Mormons call their main church, or else look around the city, but things did not work out that way. My first flight was delayed so I ended up getting into the city at 11 p.m. instead of 4 p.m., so no chance to look around at all. And my final day I was done work by about 4 p.m., but I was recovering from food poisoning (or something), so didn't have the energy to go check things out. I managed about a half hour of walking around a big shopping complex by my hotel before having to go back and lie down.
However, the view from the plane in the morning was really great. Mountains all around; I could see the big church thing on a hill overlooking the city, with the sun shining off the dome; then there was the great salt lake. The scenery was pretty cool all the way to SEattle - lots of mountains and interesting rock formations. The Seattle to Edmonton flight was low with lots of mountains to see too.

Spur of the moment decision as our national internal carrier runs "Grabba" which are super cheap tickets. The trick is to have someone in the destination who doesn't mind you descending on them as a house guests with limited notice, and to be flexible to get back. Often they special one way but not the other and only have about 4 seats on the difficult connections. (This one is usually $1000 which is the price of half way around the world with most airlines. Just paid $350.) Managed to get a return for 4 days (with a bit of juggling of work) to visit friends in an out of the way place in the South Island. He is an elderly double amputee and their last trip to me was a disaster for him so I go there now. Flight back leaves at 6.30am so will need to leave their home at 4 and gets here in time to go to work mid morning. Yeah. Only have a 6 weeks to wait to visit them.

Just booked 10 days in Andalusia, Spain in August. Wish I had time to visit friends that also live there but that will have to be another trip. I'm really excited.

as for myself, I'll be scurrying all over Blighty later this month. not long now!
I'm going to watch weather forecast on Saturday 15th July (St Swithin's day) like a hawk.

as well you might. one of the years I lived there ( I think it was '83?) it DID rain on St Swithin's day - and it DID have measurable precipation somewhere in the Brit Isles for the next 40 days... btw St S's little chapel, over one of the gates in Winchester is adorable!

I'm debating with my self. 3 to 4 weeks NewZealand beginning of 2018. I'd fly from Huston and then from NZ back to Europe.
