But since Holy Week moves around, that doesn't really mean much!
I'm off for a very short trip to Vancouver! AM going for a training course, but have three evenings free that I'm really looking forward to. The first one is devoted to finding sushi; the second, I am meeting up with three people from the Thorn Tree who I have "known" online for years and years and years (literally 15 years or more, for 2 of them, and 10 for the other); and the final evening I am going out for a curry with a girl I went to school with between the ages of 10 and 18, and haven't seen since. I"m looking forward to seeing her again too.

while sitting in our apartment in vienna we realized that we have nothing scheduled between returning from the states the end of august and planning a trip to SEA (the asian part, not seattle which we'll see in july) in february to get away from the cold weather... one of my goals has been to see the northern lights and we've been looking at all sorts of alternatives... the problem is we're getting old and creaky and like our creature comforts while to see the auroras one has to be away from city light pollution... we managed to come across an aurora cruise out of southampton for 12 days in november! yay! lots of sunless hours for spotting them from our ship... yeah, cruising is NOT our style... yesterday when we were wandering from little museum to little museum in old vienna we kept running the gauntlet of cruise groups squeezing a week's worth of sightseeing into 3 hours (after breakfast and before lunch!)... however this is a purpose cruise and we likely won't even leave the ship (it'll be really cold out there!) unless to tag along to an aurora center in far northern norway...

Ah, okay! In that case, add Victoria to your future wishful travel plans and I will make it dinner! I won't have to take the ferry over.

In the UK winter we are going to Malaysia and Indonesia. I have just been reading someone's comment on Trip Adviser about a waterfall about 90 minutes drive north of KL (as we know-alls call it). "Please note," he writes, "there is NO internet connection." Gosh, poor bereft metropolitan guy. However he has good news. "The waterfall is within walking distance of the carpark." What would you say - 15 minutes walk to the waterfall. 5 minutes looking at it. 15 minutes walking back to the car. Then get the hell away to somewhere his iPad works.

I have a 50 year high school reunion this summer, so I will take a very pleasant route up through the Rockies and around while I am will be out and about. I haven't decided yet if I will take my car or our camper.. I have booked places, and will be staying with friends in various communities, but camping in the Rockies is special.

That sounds like a very nice trip, sophie - the Rockies are so stunning. Where is the reunion?
I have a 35 year high school reunion this summer. Not sure if I'm going, but I think so. However, it's here in Saskatoon, so no fun trip attached.

reunions are amazing. I always go if I can, but 50ths are over the top - as people realize that they ARE special and that in future there may be less attendees...

My reunion will be in a small, old town called Nelson, nestled in the mountains west of the Rockies. THere are hot springs and glaciers nearby, big lakes, lots of hiking (also lots of grizzlies, but that's another story) and memories.

This could double up in the moan thread as well, however, we've made bookings to go to Zanzibar. We mentioned it to some friends who asked for more details and then said they'd like to go at the same time. No problem, it'd be good. But, they don't seem to like the hotel we've booked at and would like us to cancel ours and re-book at their choice - which has a few disadvantages, namely no pool, but does have a lot better decor, a lot posher and more traditional. But also costs half as much again. I've sent them a mail detailing whys and hows of our choice compared to theirs and mentioned that they are not far apart and taxis are cheap.
It struck me as to the reasons why someone makes a choice in these sorts of circumstances. For us, one of the priorities is the facilities and services as we won't be spending much time in the room anyway. For others, it doesn't matter so much as long as the place looks good. One factor, which many might not be aware of, is that in most places on the coast in Zanzibar, the beaches are very shallow. This means that for many hours a day when the tide goes out, you actually can't get to have a swim. It is too difficult to walk through the beach/mud to get to it. So a pool is for us a necessity and I don't care so much that the hotel decor is a bit bland compared to traditional wood.

As Mark points out, holidaying with friends is difficult. Some years back we went to New Brunswick with my oldest college chum and his family. We rented a boat on the St John river. Though we shared the cost equally my old chum decided that only he could drive the boat. I got my own back as I was the only one who caught any fish.

I had a bad experience with other couples when I was in my mid-twenties and decided then the best option for me/us was to just sort ourselves out and they join in if they want. It works the other way round as well for us. Friends suggest something and do most of the research then we just 'tag along' without complaint or demands in the form of suggestions.

Next week we are on our annual drive to continental Europe. The idea is to fill the car on the way back with wine which pays for our trip. We are catching the ferry to Dunkirk and crossing over the border to Belgium. We then travel through Belgium and Luxembourg and a bit of Germany before returning to France. Then it is into Switzerland to stay a couple of nights with friends in Neuchatel. Back into France for a few nights in Alsace which Mrs Faz has never visited. Then returning on the homeward journey.

We are off fairly early tomorrow to catch the ferry to Dunkerque. I hope Mrs Faz will be able to post photos of our trip to Swissieland and Alsace but Photobucket is proving a real pain.
