Doing a Panama cruise with a friend in January. Figured this was the only way I would see the canal (which I have wanted to see for decades) as I couldn't find anyone crazy enough to do this region up close and personal and stay on the San blas islands.. And I guess with the Zika virus in that region these days, probably safer as well. It isn't a trip I am truly excited about, but it will be nice to spend a couple of weeks with a good friend and be lazy!

We're going to Costa Rica in February! And I cannot believe how cheap the flights we found were. It was literally half of what we'd expected to have to pay! $600 (Canadian) out of Saskatoon!! EVen though we have to spend the night in Houston each way, it'll be cheaper than any trip ever.
Haven't researched exactly where we'll go - we have a week to ourselves at first, and then are going to a skydiving event for just over a week.

Scrubb, combining my one trip there, experience of friends, and the pre-distilled TT consensus, I'd suggest 2 nights in San Generardo de Dota, then Drake Bay with a boat trip into 2 nights at Sirena Lodge.

We're looking at Drake Bay for scuba diving. Will check out San Generardo de Dota - I don't know where or what that is. Thanks for the suggestions!
We've been there before but it was 10 years ago, and the only place from that trip that I really want to go back to is not at the top of my husband's list, so we're looking at different areas.

SGdD is the site of the Hotel Savegre, a mountain lodge with spa between San Jose and Drake Bay, well-placed to enable proceeding directly there from SJO and then making the short but complicated trip to Drake Bay on a later date. Nice grounds and valley, and they lead birdwatching outings to see the local quetzals.

Three weeks today we fly to Catania in Sicily. We hope. There are warnings that Vesuvius is threatening to erupt, wiping out much of Naples. And Sicily is just south of Naples. That would be a humanitarian disaster right on the doorstep of Catania (which has its own volcano Etna breathing down its neck). And, speaking selfishly, would volcanic ash close airspace above Sicily?

Leaving tomorrow for a Panama Canal cruise. Good timing as it turns out, as it is cold here, with more snow forecasted. It will be my first 'real' cruise, not sure how I will like it, but willing to try it. See you all in a few weeks.

Alex Jones (InfoWars, Prison Planet)! From Wikipedia: But that said: the article is not about Vesuvius, it is about the Phlegraean Fields, which are on the other side of Naples to Vesuvius. Unlike Vesuvius, the Phlegraean Fields is a pukka supervolcano, its last major event (38,000 BC) spat out more magma than Tambora (1815 followed by the "Year without a Summer"). It is probable that there has been no eruptions on the scale of the Campanian Ignimbrite Eruption (Phlegraean Fields) in recorded historical times. Were it to give a repeat performance, it would be a tad worrying for the world, not just Naples. The Fields have been getting a bit excited recently and it could erupt big style but that doesn't happen often, perhaps once or twice in every 100,000 years it seems.

only 2.5 weeks left until our skiing trip in the bayerischer wald ... still got to get appropriate clothing for a. and in part for myself ... and i hope she likes it, as she inherited my tendency to get a bit scared (and is not yet old enough to decide to do things despite being scared) ...

We are in Brighton at present. It is an interesting town but with our current situation three days is enough. So tomorrow we are off to Romsey to stay with Mrs Faz's sister for a couple of nights. We return here on Sunday but we hope just for one night. Then on Monday afternoon we'll take the train or coach to Gatwick for a night in a hotel and catch the flight to Catania on Tuesday. Fingers crossed.
