Right now I am in Spain, working. But end of July, on the way home I will visit Andorra. I can't say I have visited Andorra and I am sure you can find nice spots. But I have driven through it. The road through the main town seemed one long strip of duty-free shops. And crossing the border into France we were stopped by the Customs. They seemed nonplussed that we had't bought a single bottle of whisky.

only two more weeks until our trip to romania, and i am starting to get my usual pre-travel jitters ... like, i am not ready yet, there is too much to prepare (though i can't quite think of what that would be) ... strange that i still get this, knowing that i will be completely fine and happy once there ...

We are off to Romsey tomorrow morning, staying in Mrs Faz's sister's house. When we stayed there last year we succeeded in blowing the electricity. The fuse box was in the garage (!). And we didn't have the key. Hey-ho.

I'm off to Prague to visit my brother and his family in a few weeks with the kids. Looking forward to see them all and hanging out in the parks, Prague has good parks. We always eat well there too.
BUT BUT BUT main excitement I just booked a villa in Ibiza for 18 of us for my 40th at end of October. Woooot Woooot! We were going to rent a house in Dorset but it's cheaper to go to Ibiza even with flights ha ha. In a small village with a few restaurants and a good sunset, just hanging out and drinking beer all day :-0

The early bird gets the cheapest worm. We are planning a break in Sicily this coming winter. Yesterday I booked our flights. London Gatwick to Catania return cost £113 for two people. The departure times are good too.

Enjoying ten days in Turkey at the Mediterranean. It's hot, I'm being lazy and the sea is just a few steps away.

I'm hoping to take a cargo ship from Le Havre to Santo Tomás de Castilla some time in the next six months, via Kingston and Cartagena.

I'm hoping to take a cargo ship from Le Havre to Santo Tomás de Castilla some time in the next six months, via Kingston and Cartagena. That sounds really interesting. Where did you find the cargo boat? How long is the voyage? Will you fly back?

I'm sure there are any number of English language cargo trip sites to consult, but I have been using mer-et-voyages.com which is a French site specialised in cargo trips. This trip takes 17 days on a container ship. Unfortunately, they are all container ships now, so they stay in port much less time than they used to -- often only 24 hours. I was planning on flying back, but now it is looking like I might fly there (visiting a friend in Guatemala City, a place I must admit that I would never go spontaneously, but that sort of makes it even better). There are two ships a month for this particular route, which stop in different ports from the ones I listed. And of course I should mention the price -- for a single passenger, this costs about 2000 euros but considering the length of time with full board, it isn't so bad for those of us with time to kill. My longest ocean voyage up to now has been 8 days (New York-Gibraltar-Naples-Cannes) and I loved every minute of it, so doubling the time doesn't bother me at all.

I once had a great trip from South Africa when ships were the way to travel. We left from my home town Durban up the east coast of Africa calling in at Beira, Dar-es-Salam, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Aden, Suez, Port said and then across the Med and docked at Venice. At dawn. My first sight of Europe. Amazing.

Anyway, the ships on that particular line have 8 cabins for passengers.

ah...how nice Nin.. May I ask where you are ? At my in-laws summer house near Ayvalik. It's always windy here and the sea is always cold. I quite like it here cause it is a small community of house owners who have been spending their summers here for the past 2-3 decades. Ĺike a small village!

I'm hoping to take a cargo ship from Le Havre to Santo Tomás de Castilla some time in the next six months, via Kingston and Cartagena. Nice! That is something I want to do when I'm retired and am more flexible with my time off. Sounds lovely to travel on a real cargo ship. I'd take a load of books and lots of stuff to knit with me and look at the sea a lot. Is it true that some cargo ships come with swimming pools?

Nin, they all seem container ships now. The deck is stacked high with containers. A swimming pool would mean lots fewer. Looking at photos of the ships you can see the bridge and the living quarters and then masses of containers. It's a wonder the ship doesn't topple over when the wind gets up.

Actually, the company that I have been investigating says that their ships have a TV lounge, DVD players, a restaurant with attached lounge, a fitness room and a swimming pool. I suspect that the swimming pool is a bit symbolic and not up on deck. The cabins are air conditioned and have a seating area with a refrigerator, chest of drawers, closet, sofa and bathroom. Oddly enough, I have been most intrigued by the refrigerator. What is one supposed to put in it? Is there a shop on board? Can you take stuff from the dining room and store it for midnight snacks? And what about beer? I hope to have answers to all of these questions some day but only when I travel because I refuse to be one of those obsessive planners who harrasses the company with endless questions ahead of time.

Mrs Faz gave me a choice. Either I had a party to celebrate my birthday on Saturday or we went away. Within an hour I had booked flights and accommodation. So tomorrow we are flying to Treviso (near Venice) and returning home next Monday.
