I have no idea sunshine. I'd normally drive everywhere. You don't hear much good or bad about them so I tend to think I'll give one or two of them a try. They seem cheap enough.

i traveled mainly by bus, took the train only once (from alappuzha to varkala). found busses good to get around in, though admittedly it was of advantage that i could read some basic malayalam, not all busses have the destination written in latin letters ... nicest parts imho were wayanad, kochin (plus a trip to the backwaters), varkala and munnar. thekkady was nice too, and the "kreuzweg" and the monastery at vagamon are a good "off the beaten track" location (kerala has about 1/3rd christian population, so there are as many churches as temples there, and also a lot of mosques). in wayanad, i liked the hike up chembra peak best, in munnar a hike into the hills above the plantations. in kochin, we did a full day tour with partly small canals in a small boat, and partly the lake and bigger canals in a bigger boat - the small canals were definitely the more interesting part. admittedly, it was touristy, but not in an annoying way.

Finally got our usual annual holiday fixed. We'll be in Thailand, leaving home 26 January, returning 29 February.
This year we have been to Tunisia, France and Turkey. Notice anything in common with those 3 countries? Yes, they have all had terrorist attacks. So beware of Thailand in February.

We are in Bath at the moment. This is half an hour from home (or an hour the way we did the journey) so I don't know if it counts as a trip. Mrs Faz's son's house is on a hill overlooking the city. We want to go to the centre tomorrow but there is the Christmas market on at present and parking is not possible. So we'll drive out to the Park & Ride and take the bus in. I hope the rain eases off.

shrjeff -- considering Petersburg? If you arrive for a short visit by cruise or ferry, the burdensome Visa requirement is waived.

Handy for the airport then. Yes. I booked our accommodation in Treviso first then waited until the fares on Ryanair came down.

Sorry, sunshine! No, I was exhausted before my trip and didn't plan properly and then it was very busy with family. I was seriously struggling to find one day I could have escaped to visit you both lovely people. Next time!

I will be 50 in October and have booked to take my 3 grown up kids with respective girlfriends and boyfriend and Mrs. H to our favourite island in Malaysia, Perhentian, where we took the kids quite a few times when they were growing up, will be great to have a family holiday again. Spending the money on this rather than a big 50th party at home :-)

If you happen to be in KL would be great to meet up again Baz, but mine is a flying visit. I get in on the 25th and leave March 3rd, but have to go to Penang for a conference on the 27th/28th.
