Another vote for Cairns. I learned to dive on Fitzroy island. Great diving in the area.

a friend of mine from australia just told me she is planning to rent a cabin in rjukan, norway, for two weeks in february, and asked if i want to join them for a few days. very very tempted - and for now it looks like i could get cheap flights to oslo ... just gotta figure out how much it'd cost me to get from oslo to rjukan, and how do-able that journey would be with a toddler, and all that ...

Wikki - don't forget you need to leave around 24 hours between diving and flying (after you've been diving). Cairns is OK. December is box jelly fish time, but the islands and off the coast are generally jelly fish free. Be prepared for less than perfect weather, though (although you might get lucky). It is the wet season.
We will be in Singapore and Thailand after Christmas. It will be 18 months since the last trip, so REALLY looking forward to it.

The few days that I have before work I will stay in Melbourne with friends and then end of January I have a week off. and thats when I will go up to the reef, gives me more time. Thanks for the heads up for the weather, I guess I should start with my actual research

It may be that I can grab two or three weeks holiday next February/March away from the family. Mrs M could well be going to see a friend in Colombia before that and so to be fair, I said I'd slip away by myself afterwards. With the new eVisa scheme up and running for India and reasonably cheap flights I'm tempted to go again. I have looked at Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Belize instead.

Just booked a special offer business class flight with Finnair from Malaga to Delhi. I'll probably then get an internal flight somewhere else in the country. Maybe Chennai this time, though it could be Bengaluru/Madurai/Kochi/Kozhikode. Somewhere in the south anyway.

I'm still in the early stages of thinking where to go but I'll certainly bear both suggestions in mind. I'm even considering not renting a car this time and getting trains/buses.

From Chennai airport we took a taxi to Mama. It was something like £10. After Mama we took buses and trains.

Did you book the trains on Cleartrip? What about buses? Just turn up? I presume they were for shorter journeys. I'm looking into getting an Indrail pass, possibly.

For trains we bought tickets before we went on Cleartrip. Buses we just turned up and some of the journeys were 5 or 6 hours. We booked our accommodation in Mama because I knew where I wanted to stay (not where Gobhoza and Geekie stayed). We also booked in Cochin but when we arrived at the place they said they had never received our email. This was a lie as they had emailed back to confirm our booking. However we found somewhere much nicer to stay so all was well. Everywhere else we just looked as we had no rigid itinerary.

we took the bus from kozhikode to wayanad and just showed up there (as with all the other busses in kerala). sometimes had to wait a while/took a moment to figure out which bus goes next, but never had real problems ... (okay, we sometimes had to stand for the first few hours, but that was from small places where the bus arrived already full, not from the busses starting point). i really liked cochin too ...

We found bus stations confusing in India. We found it best to find a driver - any driver - and ask him which was the right bus for us.

there was one bus station where we got the best seats in a still empty bus. except, shortly before leaving time, they changed the assigned bus for the journey and announced it in malayalam. so we only found out when we were suddenly alone in the bus, so then we had to hurry, and ended up without seats on the bus that was actually going. but we still got where we wanted to go.
