In about 11 days I will be flying to Toronto where Mr_S and I will have 2 evenings and most of a day together, plus I have an afternoon and a work-day to spend with other friends; then I fly to London for 3 days of meetings; Eurostar to Paris for 2 days of work there; finishing off with 1 day in Paris on my own time.
It's mostly work, but I'm looking forward to it.

Mrs M has just got back from Beirut and we've been discussing logistics as regards all the flights we need to take this year. It is quite complex. We noticed that there is a period of a couple of months towards the end of the year that is quiet and we mentioned that at that time I have no commitments. I now have a pass signed to allow me to go to Australia (or somewhere, but probably Australia) for up to six weeks! Yay!!

That's tough.
I often wonder why people like pilots strike - I mean the logic of it. After all, they are striking against you (the passenger), yet there is nothing that you can do.

They gave me a phone number to ring, in Germany, to re-book. Needless to say I couldn't get through. I tried the Lufthansa number for the UK with the same result, after many attempts. I then thought that I'd be wasting my time and a personal visit was in order - so ten minutes away (everything is ten minutes away in Amman) is the Lufthansa office. I arrived as they opened at 9am to be met by two very pretty (sexist I know, but still pretty) girls in smart uniforms (I like a girl in uniform as well) with apologetic smiles on their faces. Later they said they expected to have a bad day dealing with many disgruntled customers both in person and on the phone.
Anyway, I was asked if I really needed to travel on the day I was supposed to. The real answer is no, as it's just a holiday, but I said yes because I wanted to try an avoid the flights for Lufthansa that means I have an seven hour layover in Frankfurt airport (had to book on them originally because of other complications regarding return flights for the family at different times). I know that airlines will try and get you on the first available flight even though it may be with a competitor. I had my eye on a Turkish Airline flight that was more convenient, the service is better, the transit time is half and Istanbul airport is a fine enough stop for a while.
So, got a result. The Turkish flight has been booked for us, the start time is only ten minutes or so later than the Lufthansa one but the arrival time is over three hours sooner.

Not next, but I'm definitely going to Thailand and Laos.
So far it is looking like straight to Chiang Mai (old friend who lives there) for 3/4 days inc day trip to Lamphun, possibly Thaton, Mae Salong then to Chiang Khong border and across to Laos for boat ride to Luang Prabang with 3/4 days in LP. Down to Vientiane across border and back to Bangkok on train and then fly to Surat Thani get boat over to islands. 1 week on islands no current itinerary other than ending with homeopath friend in Ko Samui who works in big posh wellness clinic for A listers - apparently she can get us a good deal for a couple of nights.
Any advice welcome, we are going in October.
Is Golden Triangle worth it?
We have 25 days including the day we land (midday) and the day we fly (7pm). I think we are already pushing it but don't know.
Mil gracias.

Tha Ton is interesting and you can walk up the 9 levels to the Buddha on the hill. You can take a boat down the river to Chiang Rai. We stopped off on the way at My Dream guest house. Nice position in a village on the river but the owner seems to have taken to boozing. From Chiang Khong down river to Luang Prabang you have the choice of a slow boat (cramped, does it in two days, awful night at Pak Beng) or a fast boat that does it in one day (even more cramped and so noisy that people report having hearing problems afterwards). We found a third way, the Nagi. This was a comfortable boat (think airline seat where you can't even touch the seat in front with your feet) with food brought to you. That seemed the best choice. The Nagi has changed since we did it. Here is what TripAdvisor reports: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g293949-d325298-r121449571-Mekong_River-Laos.htmlSo I can't comment on that. We didn't think a great deal of Vientiane. Cross the border to Nong Khai which is much nicer. We stayed at Mut Mee: mutmee.com/We recommended IanUK to stay there and he so loved it he stayed a week. You can fly Bangkok-Surat Thani or you can take the overnight train. Go First Class and have food brought to your 2-person cabin. Obviously you are set on going to Ko Samui. I saw the island in 1985 and I wouldn't want to see what it has become now. I would like you to go from Surat Thani (bus, easy)to Khao Sok national park and stay just outside at Our Jungle House: www.khaosokaccommodation.com/Have a tree house. You must do the excursion to the lake. Enough for now.

Thanks Baz, I'm not going to do the boat to Chiang Rai because we don't have time to do both and I want to do the slowboat to Luang Prabang. Not sure if we can afford the Nagi, will check it out.
We don't have a choice regarding Ko Samui because of friend, but it doesn't mean to say we have to stay there the whole week - she is on the south of the island

The Nagi is definitely more expensive now than when we did it. 7 or 8 years ago it did the trip in one long day.
About the slow boat. We spent some days at Luang Prabang and used to go to the jetty at 5 in the afternoon when the slow boat arrived. Nobody looked as if they enjoyed it. They looked bored and exhausted. On TT I have read tales of spending nights in Pak Beng in rat-infested huts. Not all the huts are dire but you should get off the boat smartly to make sure you get a decent one.
On Samui I have stayed on Maenam beach. In 1985 only Cleopatra's Palace was open. It had five huts under the palm trees edging the beach. It was idyllic.
