Unusually Mrs M and I will be able to spend the next three whole weeks together without one or the other of us popping off somewhere. But at the beginning of March I will be returning to the UK to finish off doing up my dad's old house. I'll then put it on the market and maybe, maybe, it will be the last time I'll be in the UK at all. I will have no roots or commitments there whatsoever.

Hedonista, re New Orleans: I was there on a business-plus trip a few weeks ago, had a great time, and heartily recommend Cochon (border of the CBD/Lower Garden District, locavore tip-to-tail pig) for gourmands.
Next business-plus trip is to the Florida Keys. My business travel is more often to places like Indianapolis, so I'm not complaining.

In the meantime I have to go Asia on business at least twice and keep putting my trip off. I've really had enough of the solo travelling over the last two years and it is becoming a real chore. I should be going this month but trying to stretch it until March or even April if I can get away with it.

London (well burbs around it) for the weekend. Catch up time with a close friend I met on my big OE 45 years ago. Have kept in touch and have been lucky enough to have their kids spend months in NZ using my place as their home from home, attended all the family weddings, significant 60th wedding anniversary of the parents, and one sad funeral. Ill health means I now go to them rather than them join me sometimes on one of my overseas jaunts. Will be nice but a bit bittersweet as this is likely to be my last 'biggie' due to possible forced retirement. Will pack cheese, wine and as it is still raining - gumboots.

Next stop - home. At the moment all I want is my own bed. Got a stinker of a cold, 3am to the airport, 3 airports and 36 hours later I should be home. Off to the pharmacy for some 'kill me or cure me'

Seems like Laos and Thailand are on the cards, Baz I'm going to be asking you more about My Dream etc.

My Dream gets a sort of mixed review from us. We arrived by boat and it all looked fine: lovely jungly setting on the river bank, immaculate huts. Go for one on the river so you can sit on your balcony and watch the river life. We didn't do any of the excursions, which seemed expensive. Unfortunately we weren't well (me in particular, as a hernia suddenly upset my life). We walked on dirt roads up and down the river so we saw a lot of local life.
The problem was really the owner (Nan, if I remember rightly). He had created it all from a patch of jungle his family owned and he did it well. But he has taken to drink and simply neglects to do things. Also he is a bore when he sees you and stops for a long chat.
One place we liked very much was Chiang Dao (north of Chiang Mai). Not the town itself which is nowheresville but Rainbow Cottages. We had a cottage right on a rice paddy with a fabulous mountain view. We had excellent Thai food there from a charming girl. The owner was in hospital so you'll need to do some research to see what the situation is. There are good walks or cycle rides round there. Just be careful using the map they give you as they have placed some villages on the wrong roads and that led us seriously astray. (We had to walk 19 kms one day in heat and humidity which certainly made us appreciate a drink when we got back.

Tomorrow we are off on the long drive home - 1,740 kilometres. Tomorrow's stage is short (260 km) so we can have time in Cordoba. Then Friday we drive to Mahora, just a staging post. Saturday we are in L'Escala on the Costa Brava. Then Sunday afternoon we get home - assuming all the kilometres have gone smoothly.

baz, I'm sure you are aware there are tons of things to see in Cordoba and not a lot of time to see them. If though you are stuck for something to do, just on the outskirts to the west is Medina Azahara - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medina_AzaharaIt made a change as there were few tourists in comparison to the centre of the city. There is an impressive museum at the entrance and then as it is a restricted area you are bussed the kilometer or so to the main site. Just a thought.

Off to the UK via Easyjet to Gatwick this afternoon. As mentioned before, fingers crossed, it may be the last time I 'need' to go to England. Any other trip there will be purely for pleasure.
