When politicians caution against panic it is probably past the time to do just that.
I get the feeling that they are being a lot less than honest but I always get that feeling about them.

From the PoliticsHome website:
Matt Hancock, the UK Health Secretary has reassured people that the food supply is secure and that: "“We are working with the supermarkets to make sure that, if people are self-isolating, then we will be able to get the food and supplies that they need”
But supermarket sources told the BBC they had not discussed delivering food to homes. An executive said: "Matt Hancock has totally made up what he said about working with supermarkets. We haven't heard anything from government directly."
The executive added: "While I think people don't need to panic buy and should just shop normally, I'm not sure the government can guarantee all food supply in all instances."
A senior executive of one supermarket chain meanwhile accused Mr Hancock of lying about their involvement in preparations. “I am really angry about it,” they said. Another supermarket boss said the Department of Health had only contacted his company for the first time yesterday.
So the Health Secretary went on the TV and told a load lies. No real surprise, but to do it so blatantly and to be called out so quickly as a "liar" on a subject so sensitive he is really excelling himself.
Time to check the supplies in the bunker.

here every supermarket chain is competing for on-line ordering and delivery! we did so twice when returning from trips to an empty larder and being too wiped out from jet lag to go to the store... so no real panic around here that i've noticed...

I usually buy online but as less people are now going to malls and making purchases, I decided to buy our new dishwasher at a physical store to help the salesperson meet their targets for this month. A small gesture but I hope it helps. I spent more than I was planning to as well but hoping it will be worth it as we bought a Miele.

the cdc has now said - don't go on a cruise ship and more to something I care about: do not take long air journeys... I see my pulmonologist on Tues and will ask him for something to try and get my miles back that I used for the ticket to Mexico. The airline has said that if you BOUGHT your ticket you can change ,cancel etc... But I still think I'll wait a bit anyway and see if travel is more controlled/closed etc...or is they cancel the flights. shit.

we've been into cruising lately as it gets us to places we otherwise wouldn't and thus we're on a few discussion boards... the cdc, imo, is not up-to-date about how good cruise lines are coping with the threat of infections since the norovirus problems... we're signed up for a baltic cruise in the last half of may... we'll see what's happening in two months...

meanwhile, the parents on tzarevich's college board: "I imagine there is a chance that in near future the college could close temporarily?" "Any chance study abroad kids will be called home?" "Our daughter and a classmate are coming to Miami. Plenty of soap and Purell on hand."
just chill, folks. these are the people who worried about bed risers, the availability of laundry service & whether campbell parker would be warm enough.

from the artist ai weiwei:
"Perhaps I have inherited something from my father, the poet Ai Qing. One of his most famous poems, I Love this Land, was written in 1938 as the city of Wuhan fell before the Japanese military:
If I were a bird I would sing myself hoarse About this land torn by storm This raging river that surges around our anger This furious wind that roars without end And about the ever-gentle dawn that rises through the trees Then die Even my feathers to rot in the earth Why are there always tears in my eyes? I love this land too deeply"

there are some epidemiology studies coming out which indicate that, as with any new virus, lots are catching it, but mortality seems to be associated with pre-existing illnesses as well as smoking and living in a region with air polution, i.e. lung problems... ergo the aged are over-represented among the fatalities as we accumulate chronic illness over time, but when one controls for chronic illness, etc. it isn't that high for healthy oldies - like about 1/2%...

I had to go to the local medical centre to query a doctor about why one of my meds had been stopped. She blamed computer error. What struck me was that the waiting area was almost empty. Few people are making appointments to see a doctor. Are people scared they might catch an infection? Not from the old magazines that used to pass the time. They have all been removed, I suppose on the grounds they could pass on the virus.

Baz, best places to catch viruses are airports, hospitals, churches and large gatherings. Every Sunday we work at a National Trust property. There is a constant stream of people. Both Mrs Faz and I are close to people while we talk to them. We both handle money they have given to us. Let us hope we don't pick up any germs.

yes, the official advice is to keep your distances and wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. Keep your interactions to minimal and frankly, if you feel like letting others volunteer, stay home. It is not a sign of panic, it is a sign of taking care of one's own. My parents' physician has told them they need to go shopping when the stores are quiet, which is a totally reasonable measure since they are both at risk, and it doesn't stop them from doing what they're doing.

re the hand-washing: to be sure to get to the full time you can sing a song or say a poem. Two of them are to sing the Happy Birthday song twice, or, if Anglican/Episcopal sing the Doxology once !

FWIW my normal supermarket shopping resembles panic buying.
