I cancelled a planned trip to Washington state after some discussions with friends. Not something I did lightly, but glad I did it.

until this blows over it is a time to limit one's contacts to the minimum of well known people who haven't been traveling... it is not a guarantee but it increases the odds of avoiding the virus at this time...

So Trump has stopped all flights from Europe to the USA. Extraordinary. Are flights from Japan and South Korea also banned? Flights from the UK are still allowed. Does this mean that citizens from continental Europe have to take a flight to Britain, change planes and then fly on to the US?

some of the decisions are rooted in diplomacy... for example, israel wanted to ban flights from the u.s. as well as lots of other places... pence called bibi and remonstrated with him not to single out america... the result was a total ban on all countries - which actually makes more sense if one wants to seal off the outside world...

^ yep - a friend of mine has a friend who is trapped in Israel. Had been volunteering on a kibutz, was sent out of there, but can't leave Israel for some other c-virus related testing thing. And that was before no-flights into the US anyway. There are going to be lots of stories like this - globally. What a mess !

Here, amongst some other measures, they have closed the pensioner clubs. Most places have a subsidized social club for ancient ones.
Somehow some of these measures don't make a lot of sense to me. What will people do instead? Visit their children and grandchildren?

If I have a needs based shopping list and stick to it, can that still be panic buying?
It is not my buying that is panicky, but what I do if can't buy will be.
ETA:
Time for a nap, then some baking, some gardening, some dog care, some supper, some stocktaking, some stock-control, some shopping list printing, and leave for tomorrow to decide when we go shopping.
FWIW: Here supermarkets, even quite big ones, only get daily deliveries of goods that quickly perish, so which day of the week to shop needs to take that into account.

We live in the county of South Gloucestershire. This has one case. Our nearby city is Bristol, which has three. So far we are not greatly affected.

Here, visitors to homes for the elderly find the doors closed and a note stating visits are strictly forbidden. One of our cantons, bordering with Italy, is in a state of emergency. The rest of the country might be put under state of emergency within days.

to me the contrast between all the news and talk and panic and everything, and daily life which here so far is the same as usual, is a bit surreal ... well, we have to disinfect our hands and our desks at work now, and i guess i should start taking my laptop home after work, in case they decide we should work from home ...

Things seem pretty normal here, or at least normal for here.
Yesterday's count of cases was more than double the previous day's.

One half of me says Okay, the other half says No Way. Up to 15,000 coming to my small city this weekend for a music festival. Cancellation was problematical and financial suicide as so far large gathering have not been banned so no insurance/no refunds. Many of them overseas performers and others people who follow the music festivals. Difficult to avoid them even if you don't go to the festival. They will be in the supermarkets, cafes, the transport services, petrol stations, camped at the racecourse where there is a tent city and already work have had a number of food stall holders calling in to collect emergency equipment as they didn't read the instructions around fire prevention and got told by the organising committee - no fire blankets/extinguishers - no stall. With a probable 10-14 day incubation period..... Hello Coronovirus.

kiwi, stay home as much as you can. if you have to do food shopping and it cannot be delivered, go early when they'll be sleeping. it's ok to be rude and to keep people at a distance.

annie, i think that kuski's concern is that there will be those among the visitors who are vectors of infection and will infect others who will infect others, etc. etc... so even if she hides during the even itself, the consequences will continue to impact over the next month or so...

^ that's my concern. The invisibility of it. The place is small. Medical facilities are good but only suitable for our size. Ie. Only 8 airlock hospital rooms with the right air circulation containment (don't ask how I know.. just nod wisely).Normal winter respiratory problems take us to the limit staff wise so even 10 cases would be problematical. I see since I wrote this that other festivals have been cancelled including Pacifica.. measles decimated the children of the Pacific recently as despite vaccination availability so many decided its not necessary. After learning the tragic way many have decided that group gatherings are not worth the risk until we know more about this virus and how it moves, transmits, and mutates.
I'm going out to the farm to the annual bottling (CANNING for Sophie) session. About 60 kg of goldenqueen peaches and 40kg of tomato relish. Should keep me out of immediate harms way.

Kuskiwi, I think you’re doing the right thing getting away to the farm. Peaches wins hands down. The long weekend just gone is when the Italians do their pasta sauces.
Annie, good idea about timing supermarket shopping when most people are asleep. Or otherwise occupied. I need to get milk, it can probably wait but I’ll go out now as it’s just gone nine o’clock. PM, that is. But.........today IS Friday the 13th!

Slow - it's obv not quite reached your little village but - per the NYT (8:45am my time) RIGHT NOWSpain ordered its first lockdowns, affecting about 70,000 people in four towns in Catalonia, to try to slow the spread of the virus.

... and daily life which here so far is the same as usual ... not quite, anymore. school will be closed from tuesday at least until the end of the easter holidays, so i'll have to work from home and entertain (and home school) my kid ... mom offered to take her (she also is taking care of my niece and nephew), but i am not sure i feel comfortable with that - even if the chances are low, if a. was infected without symptoms, my mom and my brother would be at risk ...

that's why there is day care provided in Austria, so parents that can not stay home do not give the kids to their grandparents. I will still visit my grandmother. She needs some happiness and she is very happy when I visit her.

Well I think all hell is about to break loose around here.
Spain is going to invoke emergency powers and Extremadura will as of Monday close all schools, colleges, university, and adult education, (if face to face), also to close are all cultural, leisure, and sports centres.
The supermarkets are out of or very nearly out of flour (all grades), pasta, milk, carrots (yes seriously) paper towels, toilet paper, chickens, convenience food, etc..
Main shopping day is Saturday, restocking is normally done prior to the weekend, e.g. Thursday/Friday, so there is a real risk of the shops being bare for another 6/7 days.

when they close the schools, who will take care of the children of the nurses & doctors? which is why my mom has to take my niece and nephew (she already does so very often, anyway, as two parents working shifts isn't possible, otherwise) ... well, my little brother offered to help me with a., too - after all, his school is closed, too ... so i think i will manage with part of the time working while she plays or gets to watch more TV than usual, and part of the time working while he plays with her/helps her with homework ...

We have been able to shop fairly normally. But it is strange the things that disappeared off the shelves. Bottled water disappeared (but has come back). Same for toilet paper. The frozen food cabinets have big gaps: no sweetcorn, beans, peas or spinach.
I got an email about working at the National Trust property on Sunday. I will reassure people that the cups I give samples of hot drinking chocolate have been sterilised. I will be given a bottle of hand sanitiser but I must hide it in case it gets stolen.

A friend has just reported a bad rash on her hands. Overuse of sanitizer?
AA no issues with shopping early as that's my routine. More than usual there though this morning. Its 8am and all packed away. Couldn't get my repeat script though of panadeine as it's now on limited supply (the packaging comes from China) - 1 box of 50 per person - and if you get prescribed 2 only allowed one and the last pick up date is checked to see you are not stockpiling. I was a week too early. Fortunately I don't need maximum doses and can get by without it but it does highlight how we have slowly and perhaps without acknowledging or recognising how much we reply on Asian countries for many of our day to day products or the containers they come in.
Riki - childcare for healthcare people will be a nightmare.

Yes, however, if everybody follows the guidance for heightened hygiene, then risk will be minimal. Obviously, we know how humans follow rules.

As for childcare, here in Switzerland, where schools will be closed at least until 4th April and in many places until end of April, the schools will provide childcare for those who have no other solution. doesn't that happen in Germany or anywhere else?
