Feeling a bit out of sorts because this year, for the first time in 20 years, we have not taken a big (for us 3 weeks is big) international trip.
Mr. Kimby is finding travel more stressful lately. Our travel-planning styles may be a bit incompatible. He has suggested I look for girl friends to travel with. :-(
We did go hang out on Sanibel Island, Florida, for 3 weeks in November, but since we've been going there for three or four decades, there's no stress - or novelty - involved.

Tonite, tomorrow morning my husband and I are driving bak to NOLA from NY where I have been the last 5 weeks. We don't travel that well by car together for a variety of reasons and on top of that don't have alot of time to spend on the road so,it's a pedal to the metal kind of trip. Please keep me in your thoughts, and Mr. Q. too for that matter. It wil be good to get back to "abnormal". The plan is to be back in NOLA sometime this upcoming Monday.

Mr gringa is never the easiest to deal with on trips, until we get to our destination. He is always worried we are going to miss our flight, and he doesn't like flying too much. Once we are at the hotel and can stash our bags and start exploring he is fine. Let's just say I am not much looking forward to tomorrow AM.

starting to think about organizing for the annual migration south.. and throwing the concept out there to the potters - of a winter break at chezVoy in Florida! Voy,when do you think this might be? And where in Florida? I am going to try and make another sojourn to Miami Beach in January, finances permitting. Let me know ok?

i'll be a bit south of there in january... the yucatan... Strong possibility of being there too at the end of January,my brother and his girlfriend are going, and another friend from NY has a house near Playa del Carmen(nothing fancy,it's a traditional hut like thing...). We would probably fly into Merida, love that city!!!,and rent a car and drive South. Let me know where you're going Shrjeff.

I have... and I don't know where to start ! I loved the food, the culture, the beaches and rivers, the mountains, the maya ruins, the silver jewellery, I loved my braided hair, the tequila, it was just an awesome trip. The only think I didn't like was the scorpions and tarantulas. But even they were fascinating.

Pepe,it depends on where you go in the Yucatan. The terrain varies and there is a wide range of places to go. Merida, the capital city,is very cool, the people as HT mentioned are friendly, and the food fabulous, and cheap, cheap. Merida has many offerings and is a charming city with wonderful architecture. One can ride by car (cheap rentals) and go to the Gulf Coast and see flamingos, eat marvelous seafood (also cheap, cheap). As you travel further South you go through small villages, and soon you arrive at UXmal, one of my favorite Mayan ruins. On Southward to the Caribbean you start getting into some more touristy, more expensive areas. Playa del Carmen at the base of the Yucatan is very chic, chic, although gorgeous in it's own right. I've been several times and always find something new and exciting to do. I avoid,Cozumel and Cancun as they are so built up and riddled with tourists. There are some other Mayan ruins that shouldn't be missed either,Chitciniza and Tulum are both gorgeous and breathtaking. Wear a hat. I didn't see any scorpions but have no doubt there are plenty. I saw lots and lots of iguanas, very very cool. Be sure and wear a hat!

The trip after that will almost certainly be London for one day. (in three weeks)
Not a whole lot of excitement.

quixie... we're due to arrive in merida the evening of january 11th and depart the morning of january 24th... the weekend of the 13th to 17th we're in cancun meeting friends...
i've read that the best thing about tulum is the location and that coba is much more interesting so we plan on doing that (with a drive-by of tulum) with our friends... out of merida we'll do chichen itza and uxmal...

Oh,that's a nice chunk of time to do some touring!! Are you going to rent a car to get from Merida onward South. I loved Uxmal best of all the ruins there,it was for some reason,at least at that time (late 1990's ) way less touristy. Tulum is a small ruin,it's best feature is it is smack dab on the Caribbean, so,the views are breathtaking.Other than that,it's no great shakes. When you go to Chitzinitza, check out a small town/city by the name of Villadolid. We spent two days there before heading back to Merida from the South. It's charming, beautiful architecture and very laid back. A good resting spot in between. I met some really lovely people there and ate some marvelous food. If we go,it won't be until the very last week of January. Again, wear a hat.

we're picking up a van in merida the morning of the 13th and go to cancun via chitzinitza since they will be arriving about 10pm... then we'll have the van to get around and visit coba while we're there... when we get back to merida we'll have a couple of more days so will use one to visit uxmal and the other to see the coast bird sanctuaries... we've read that just hanging out in merida for the weekend is great with lots of street activity...
too be we'll miss each other...

OH!! Do rent a skiff in Celestun and see the flamingoes!!!!!! It will blow your mind!!! There are all kinds of other cool shore birds to see as well. It's only an hour or so tops from Merida to Celestun. Some neat, funky little restaurants on the water to go afterwards, big beautiful shrimp!!!! Yes,too bad times are off. You will have a blast!! Please wear a hat.

shrjeff, do be careful. Someone broke into our car in that part of Mexico and removed everything from the trunk, including the spare tire!
Fortunately our luggage was back at the hotel, as it was about the only time we stayed 2 nights in one location.

thanks for the heads up, kimby... being a van it's all exposed anyway so anything we have with us will be exposed... the only problem is when we go to chichen itza on our way to cancun... otherwise we'll just be taking day trips...
