No idea yet. It was just announced. I guess they work really hard to place us some where else. We were supposed to be there for 2 weeks.

Getting a bit of flack for my plans to go to Myanmar following the latest atrocities however discussions with someone who travels there regularly have kept me up to date and I'll be well away from the area in question.... but as usual the stay at homers are the ones giving me grief.

kiwi, don't listen. a friend of mine is a "teacher of teachers" there. He loves the place. Tell the stay at homers that there is no perfect country on this planet, and Myanmar is much better now than it was.

when we were there we were told by the minorities that they preferred 'burma' as 'myanmar' is an 'inclusive' whitewash to conceal that the country is definitely run by the bamars... outside of the Rohingya area on the Bay of Bengal things should be quiet... enjoy, as annie says - no place is perfect... and bagan blew me away... i found it more impressive than angkor...

I still have difficulty referring to it as Myanmar... it is Burma to me but have to be politically correct sometimes.

What we call foreign countries and cities is inconsistent. I would say Burma. I have an Indian friend who resolutely sticks with Bombay. In South Vietnam a lot of locals refer to Saigon. I don't say Ellas or Deutschland. But I don't go as far as Churchill who referred to Livorno as Leghorn.

India does have a lot of places that have changed names. Invariably though, when I try and use the new name for a place I am often met with blank looks and a "Where?" then a "Oh. You mean.....(insert old name)"

I so wish IanUK were still posting. You could discuss Eboracum with him.

Mrs Faz has gone to London so today I am going to Bath. Does that count as a trip? The bus leaves in 14 minutes so I better get a move on.

Tomorrow we are going to Bourton on the Hill for 2 days. Our daughter has bought a house there so we are being gardeners to try to create some order. There is no wifi so it is back to the Dark Ages.

So we had a nice few days in the States, enjoying the hot springs and hiking trails. We might go away next week if the weather cooperates.. otherwise it’s end of the season for our RV. I am off to Hawaii for a week in early November for my next holiday.

1 hour flight after work tonight to go the big smoke to celebrate granddaughters birthday which is being held at the artificial ski run. Fortunately Grandmothers are excused from skiing. It's not my best skill.

We are off to spend a week in La Palma (in the Canary Islands but not to be confused with Las Palmas), staying in the island capital of Santa Cruz. Weather should be sunny and either 25/26 or 30/31 (depending on which forecaster one believes). It is not very touristed though cruise ships do visit. We have rented a small apartment in the historic centre.
The only downside is that our outbound flight leaves tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. So we are off to spend the night in a hotel at Gatwick airport. The Premier Inn is very convenient - we just cross the road and we enter the terminal.

for our trip to search for aurorae we fly to and from gatwick... we wound up reserving the Bloc hotel which is just INSIDE the south terminal a few yards (or meters as your wont) from the railway station which we will use to get to southampton... figure that that's even more convenient (though we won't have a time problem) as we don't need to become oriented to the airport and find out how to access the hotels from the terminals and vice versa...

Let us know what the Bloc hotel is like. We stayed at the Premier Inn because it is just metres from the North Terminal which EasyJet flies from. When we went into the North Terminal at 4.20 this morning it was unbelievably busy.

Received my tarjeta del turista for Cuba today. So silly to have to pay 27 euros for a little piece of paper. That's more than the rate I will pay to rent a villa in Old Havana.
