Mark, we'll stay in a new place in Bangkok, the Riverview Guesthouse. This is in Chinatown and well away from the normal tourist areas. It is (obviously) close to the river with a convenient stop for the river bus. Then we'll go down south of Bangkok to a place next to a national park: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFIUO3XTUgAMrs Faz loves birds and we didn't do well in Tunisia this year. The place is just outside a national park so we can visit that too. Then a bit further south to Bang Saphan, some 150 kms down the Gulf coast from Hua Hin. There is a long stretch of coastline that has not been over-run by tourists. I very much like the sound of this place: Theatre Villa. Here is someone's blog: hopaboardherewego.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/the-theatre-villa-bang-saphan.htmlWe don't want to lie on a beach too much but this sounds a good spot. Other people have said that the owner is incredibly caring about guests and has driven them off sightseeing and refused payment. Then I think we should cross over to the Andaman coast. There are various options but this is interesting: www.wasanaresort.org/But it is early days yet.

I'll have a look better at the links, but on the Wasana Resort page I think I'd put up a better photo of the owners.

I am going to Bath today. I agree that is not much of a trip from Chipping Sodbury so please imagine I am coming from somewhere further away - like New York.

I am going to Ibiza next week, just for 4 days. I am curios about this island. Lucky me I am visiting a friend there, so I can skip all the tourist places

Austin, Texas for a work trip and weekend stay-on. I have left instructions that if I return from Texas spouting Tea Party right-wing dogma, I am to be terminated with extreme prejudice.

Tomorrow morning, early, we are driving to Dover to catch a ferry to France. We are spending 3 nights in Wissant, a village on the coast just south of Calais. We shall eat lots of seafood and load the car with wine for the return journey.

My next trip is eleven months away so I'll post about it later.
Baz, I like the look of the Wasana Resort. Good price(s) too. One of the places I stayed was 1000 baht a night. And you didn't get a TV.

I've tentatively booked a (refundable) flight to Dar es Salaam, to go to Zanzibar, then get the (highly unreliable) Tazara train to the border, then drop down into Malawi to visit the lodge and village I loved so much two years ago, and have become quite involved with in the interim.
But part of me isn't as excited as I should be. It doesn't feel like my usual sort of trip.not enough moving around and not enough adventure. But there's only five weeks to go, so I'm probably being silly considering doing something else instead.
