Ooh, hope you didn’t get burned, Sophie. I have both pot holders and oven mitts and while the mitts are thicker, I find them harder to use.

Sounds nasty, Tzarine. I am lucky in the kitchen. I don't get burned or cut myself. I don't even wear an apron. I do use oven gloves to lift a roasting pan out of the oven.

Oouch, oven burns can sometimes be bad enough that they weep, and so would I.

always take water & hard candy This means she has physically to move the Always take the front door key. I put the front door key in my pocket when I get dressed in the morning. Mrs Faz appears not to have clothes with pockets so we hang a key over the front door lock. This means she has physically to move the key to unlock the door to leave the house and can then hang the key round her neck. Alas, even this system is not failproof.

I don't sit/move around the house all day with my going out trousers on so I do as with Mrs Faz and hang it on a tape on the door. In hotels the (usually) bit of card the card key comes in I wedge on the inside door handle if the card itself is being used to activate the electrics. If not, then the card gets balanced there as well. For solo women staying in hotels/hostels, carry a plastic or rubber door wedge with you and use it overnight or when necessary. It's only a small thing to carry around anyway. A tip from an airline pilot said if you put things in the room safe, put one of your shoes that you will wear the next day in there as well.

Advice I just gave to a friend , from a warmer clime, who just moved to the part of Virginia that got a foot of snow -- get a LARGE bad of kitty litter, and put it as close to over the back axle as possible. Traction. And if you do slip, great grit for under the tires. And if you don't have a cat, at the end of the season donate it to the local animal center.

Not kitty litter, but he had a bag of sand in the trunk.

Always carry a squash ball with you. In an awfull lot of places it can replace the missing plug in a sink.

Remember to put your alarm clock forward an hour when you go to bed the night before summer time begins. Being in the opposite direction to you Baz, I can hardly wait until this weekend when we put our clocks back one hour. Glory be, the time will be the correct time!

Ladies, when travelling, if you can, wear a bralette or a bra with no underwire. it helps to go through security.

Even when crossing one way streets! Splatted by a stupid prat is a meagre epitaph. I nearly disappeared under a bus at an intersection in Rome. A section of bus lane ran against the traffic. Hmmm, I think it was Rome, but it wouldn't have mattered if it had gone badly.

Here is some advice from this morning's paper from a "celebrity chef":
Other advice — written apparently in all seriousness for those in poverty — includes glueing ring-pulls to handbags to secure sunglasses and stuffing cardboard rolls with the fluff from a tumble dryer to make firelighters.
So you are desperately poor but you run a tumble dryer. Hmm.
