The premiere of The Wizard of Oz was on 10 August 1939. The premiere was not in Hollywood or New York but in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Strange. (The Second World War began 3 weeks later but I doubt these 2 facts are connected)

Impressive:
he heart of a blue whale, which can weigh about 1,300 lbs and as large as the size of a small car. The gigantic heart beats 8 to 10 times per minute and each heartbeat can be heard from over 2 miles away.

wow - that Imp is OLD ! www.visitlincoln.com/lincoln-cathedral/the-lincoln-imp and following on: One variation of the legend is found in Grimsby and tells how the second imp, having escaped petrification by the angel in Lincoln Cathedral, made his way to the town. The imp caused mayhem in Grimsby and went into St. James’ parish church, as it was at the time, to begin causing more damage and mischief. The angel who had exercised leniency at Lincoln was sent to deal with the imp and seeing it was the same one he had previously spared, this time gave it a smack on its backside and then turned it to stone. and wow - he didn't mess around at St Mary;s and All Saints : www.atlasobscura.com/places/chesterfields-crooked-spire thanks Baz, I love falling down these rabbit holes following links !

On this day in 1967 the inhabitants of Gibraltar voted in a referendum whether to remain British or become Spanish. 96% of registered voters took part. 12,138 voted to stay British. 44 voted to become Spanish. Suspicious. Almost North Korean result.

Today is International Country Music Day. I am indebted to Alexa for telling us this morning. Then I followed her advice to sing us a song. Mistake, big mistake. Alexa badly needs singing lessons.

Today is the centenary of the BBC.
When the Beeb first broadcast the news they did it twice. The first time it was read at normal speed; the second time it was read slowly so listeners could make notes.

Today is International Internet Day - 29 October. The first internet connection was made on October 29th, 1969. This was just two months after Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. To commemorate the event, International Internet Day was celebrated for the first time on October 29th, 2005.

Today in 1938 was the broadcast of Orson Welles radio drama (adapted from HG Welles novel) War of the Worlds. Apparently this caused panic in some towns in the USA whose inhabitants didn't realise it was fiction.

Today in 1952 ago was the first performance of The Mousetrap. 70 years on Agatha Christie's play is still running in London. For reasons I don't know she refused to allow it to be put on in the USA. However her estate has changed its mind so USAnians will soon see it. Expect scathing reviews.

Smith College's Mountain Day in some time during the 1st or 2nd week of Oct... The bells are rung early in the morning, all classes are cancelled, the library is locked !, and sandwich makings etc are put out in the dining rooms, and you are to spend the day in nature and admiring the color . the college sends an email to every alum, and every alum declares a personal mountain day - even if it isn't the same one. A truly wonderful tradition !!

I was given a book for Christmas , " Shit went down" -- there is a page for every day with... shit that went down. A whole page for each day. Yesterday was the day of the end of the Shogunate and restoration of the Meiji Emperor in Japan.1868, I haven't read today's yet.
