I helped out a friend in need. He's been there for me so often.... it was really good to have the opportunity to show him how much he means to me.

lunch turned into a shouting "conversation", mixed with giggles (i don't mean shouting at each other, but in turn going "whoa!" and the other pretending to be scared) ...

hired a cpa to file my u.s. income taxes as last year we sold the apartment and we have to inform them of our bank account as it's full of the proceeds and the irs has scared all these furrin banks to fink on their merkin clients... they managed to whittle down our obligation for 2013 to $0.00 and we're now all legal

About 25 years ago my daughter had a job with Steppenwolf theatre company in Chicago. She had to pay a withholding tax. Obviously, as she had earned very little during her couple of months employment, she was entitled to get this money back. When she got the forms she shrugged and said she wouldn't bother as it was too much hassles. So I did it for her (it took nearly a day). Yes, she got her refund. So next year the IRS got on to me and sent me half a tree's worth of paper forms to fill in. Get lost, I told them.

it's not often i say this, but after talking to a lot of expats who are suddenly full of headaches, the irs is making me feel sorry for americans. and anyhoo, the ones the legislation is truly aimed at will find other legal ways to hide their money.
