I was invited to participate in a "focused discussion" on healthcare in Canada. Specifically, the current mix of public and private, and impacts from shifting that balance. I'm not sure how they picked me, but it has something to do with my "lived experience". The discussion is theoretically going to "inform national policy".
I think it will be interesting, and I will do some reading on systems in other countries beforehand. Particularly France's, which is supposed to be the most effective/best system in the world, and has some kind of mix of public and private.
They want attendees to share experiences - I can certainly point out where there are some gaps in our current system, but am not sure they have much to do with the public/private balance. My lived experience, as they call it, is really entirely only within a fully public system. That said, when I was waiting for a cancer diagnosis, I did look at whether there were private options that would have been faster.

Positive: Supermercado Day, Hospital Visit for my wife.
Negative: Rain, gloom, cubierto, & some, more, or much of her sight is of historic interest only, 'tis better than it was but is as good as it gets.

Is her eyesight at the stage where you are the caregiver now or can she see enough to be independent? It is always difficult to know what the situation really is. A lot of the problem is in the huge disappointment with how a cataract procedure that commenced 10 years ago has resulted in impaired and and failing vision. I find it difficult to get straight and consistent answers out of her, on this matter, and more generally. Yesterday she was told that the cornea in one eye was irrevocably damaged but she also says that she has monocular double vision in both eyes, which I hadn't been told before. As I said, things have improved, it has taken an age to get this far, and it seems that there is nothing more to be done. She has after a long gap, returned to driving, whether she should be driving will soon be decided. In Spain, we have to undergo regular medical evaluations in order to renew your licence. Hers is due this spring. I have been through the business of having to read all her mail, documents, email to her, already during the earlier stages of this affair, so things really are better. It is disappointing that normal vision couldn't be restored. It is all a bit difficult. I may, probably will, have my own problems, and that is perhaps more of a concern. I am rambling, it was a long day (10 hour excursion) yesterday, that is in itself an issue.

Just a thought.
One thing about me, that may not be obvious, is my difficulties with language. I have the rare distinction of not being fluent in any language at all.
I just checked, and the missive above, all two to three hundred words of it, took an hour to write.
I marvel at how others and particularly youth can rattle off language at the rate of knots that they do. I couldn't even drivel at such speeds.
In case you wondered, my aural comprehension is just as bad, and much worse relating to words new to me, words that I have never seen written down. This of course encompasses all foreign languages. It has always been thus, and it played a crucial part in ending my schooling at such a tender age.
Yet strangely there is a positive side to all that. For one, you may well not have noticed, and for another, I rarely waste such efforts on things that have not been sufficiently considered.

Years ago I went to Bolivia ^^^ on a research trip (the book is One Lives, One Dies). There was a general strike and I couldn't move round. Fortunately I was stuck in Sucre, which I loved. But when you find yourself inspecting the cemetery for the second time you realise you've had enough.
Air Boliviano was on strike except for one plane which flew round the network. I heard it was calling in at Sucre so I went to the airline office. This was besieged - maybe a couple of hundred hopefuls. But there was a side alley with a door leading to the airline office. I waited and waited in the alley and eventually the door opened. 'La prensa,' I shouted and held out the press card I'd got the previous year in El Salvador. I was welcomed inside the office, sat down in a chair and given coffee. Ticket to Santa Cruz de la Sierra? I could catch an international flight from there. No problem, senor.

I also really liked Sucre. Our son has done some videos on UTube about their travels. The cable cars serving La Paz are new since I was there.. they really liked those as public transport. They also spent some time in a town a couple of hours out of Santa Cruz.

Slow, your posts always come across as very carefully thought out and written, but I'd not have guessed that you have difficulty with English, not at all.

mom still seems a bit better everytime i see her. not huge steps in development anymore, but still, it is going forward (like, last week she wanted me to walk next to her when she used the walker in the hallway, today she went to lunch with the walker on her own, while i waited in her room) ...
