On Friday we are flying to Greece and will spend 10 days on the island of Tinos. By chance there was an article in a paper today about Tinos, saying how good it was and not overwhelmed by tourism like Mykonos and Santorini. According to this article the church owns great swathes of the land and has stopped a lot of tourist bars and discos. And the locals voted against having an airport. We'll be going by ferry from the mainland which takes 3.5 hours

We'll be going by ferry from the mainland which takes 3.5 hours I approve of that and of no airport. Too many "havens" are ruined by tourists who have "discovered" a "quaint little place" and go their for a "holiday" to "get away from it all". Result? Place XYZ is no longer a haven of quiet, the lives of the locals are turned upside down and life will never be the same again. Discos, nightclubs, bars, crime, drugs et al ..... it's just like home!

flying to thessaloniki this afternoon... it was the haven for jews expelled from other countries: the iberians and the north africans... each community had its own synagogue including the mugrabi one! by the 20th century the majority of the residents were jewish - until the nazis who killed 96%!!!! only 4% were left at the end of the war

Tonight, I'm off to foreign parts. Checking out my wardrobe, what to wear. Still in my pyjamas. Comfort clothes are best for travel yes? I am after all travelling a very long way.
Shall I tell you where, or shall it remain a secret?
Stepping into foreign parts, going to a supermarket in another area to buy a 1.5L Slow Cooker.

Jeffy, I wish you both a lovely week in Thessaloniki. My parents have just come back from Greece and said this last week, the temperatures turned to hot and tourists turned up.

My guess it is another side of the city. You'd never leave choice of clothes until so late.

didn't post about my last few trips - a two day bike tour with a. towards my dad's holiday house, and then a few days there camping and swimming in the lake and similar things ... and a group tour to the area near nuremberg, exploring caves (starting out with a touristy one, and then several smaller ones - in one case we had to crawl for a few metres) ...

going away just overnight - the parents of one of a's friends have a holiday house an hour north of here, actually near my dad's holiday house, and they are celebrating the birthday of a's friend there, and all the visiting kids and parents bring there tents to camp there after the party ...

today is our last day in thessaloniki... we've been saddened by the main part of town still filled with 'ghost houses,' vacant buildings since the nazis killed the jewish residents... yesterday we spent in ancient greece, visiting phillip II's tomb and then dion, a shrine to zeus at the foot of mt olympus... we've been too athens-centric to know that mt olympus is up here as well as aristotle's village... tomorrow we're off home for a couple of weeks before we travel again...

off to old blighty this morning... a weekend in southampton before we board the cruise on sunday to ireland, iceland, norwegian fjords, holland and belgium... Jeff, if you are at a loose end, catch a bus to nearby Romsey. It is an attractive small town. It has a lovely abbey which you should visit - and wave to Mrs Faz's sister who has a house overlooking it.

If you do Romsey, see if there are tours going for Broadlands. Have fun on the fjords - if you stop in to Bergen wave "hi" to Valborg ( she was on TTYC waaaaay back when )

I can go just about anywhere, but I find myself more and more indecisive. I keep postponing my cargo trip, and it's looking more and more like I will just get on a plane and fly to Saigon for a week or so.

Yes, my first plan was to go to Guatemala, where one of my best friends lives. But that fell through, and now I am eyeing an 18 day trip from Le Havre to Cayenne, with stops in Sint Maarten and Cartagena. Who knows?
Indeed, it might be more reasonable to plan a trip from Hamburg, Felixstowe or Le Havre to Istanbul or something like that. But the idea thrills me much less.

Much as I love my location, and my job, when you are told to take a weeks holiday in the middle of winter (to fit around others dates) , hate skiing and it's peak season so super expensive, hate the humidity so you drip and scratch your way through a week, the option at the moment is stay home and hibernate. Bah humbug as a certain character may say.
