I watched the downloaded Intouchables last night - Fantastic film and thanks for the recommendation, Mrk..
It had it all and glad it's taken so much at the European Box Office - not released in England yet and I so hope all you English that subscribe to Flushed - via e-mail - go and watch it when it's, finally, out.
But! Horror of Horrors! I read that The Yanks are planning on re-making it! Why do they do this Shit?
They did it with The Whicker Man and now Totall Recall...Just why remake a Film and make it worse??

America excels at producing crap appealing to the lowest common denominator. Fact is, foreign films don't do well here. We don't want subtitles, dubbing, or un-American English accents.
I just finished "Come and See", a film about the Nazi invasion of Byelorussia, seen through the eyes of a boy of about 12 or 13. The last 40 minutes or so were hard to watch. I knew what was coming, since among the IMDB trivia fun facts was the statement "The Germans burned 628 villages in Byelorussia, and everyone in them", yet it was beyond intense to see it on film.

I hear what you say, Trentt.
I mi55ed out the worst example of this which is Get Carter! The Michael Caine orginal has a cracking ending - the remake has Sly Stallone leaving a funeral!!
The Yanks can do Fodder Films for the Masses like The Batman and Matrix shite but still can do gems like Sideways - I assume that was Yank?...
Come and see is 1985? Just had a look and it's too expensive on Amazon and too much hassle to download as it's got subtitles and it took me a week to sort out The Intouchables! I may have to wait until it comes around on TV - if at all.
I like Films that reinforces the futility of War and the inherent suffering.
I popped up to watch an outdoor screening of the latest Alien films - Prometheous - last night!
Only good thing was you could take your own booze in and have a fag!
The film was very poor, in my opinion.

Thanks for that but I really do not do Dubbed Films - rather not watch them, to be honest...
I like Subtitles.

Both methods can be crap. I've seen subtitled movies where I understood the primary language, and the subtitles were preposterously wrong.

I see a lot of incorrect subtitles in romcoms, where they are clearly not spending their subtitling budget correctly. (And why I am seeing this crap? It's the fault of my unlimited cinema pass!)
This week I saw both Total Recall and Magic Mike. Urp.... I feel really sorry for competent actors having their careers marred by this sort of crap, even though I'm sure that the shitloads of money that they receive are a pretty good consolation.

What's the story behind the unlimited cinema pass? I want one!
I mentioned Total Recall above!
Obviously not the best film ever made with Arnie in it but a good yarn and ejoyable enough but why anyone thought that a remake would be good is beyond me.
Saw 'Shifty' today. Gritty UK low budget film about Drugs etc. Very good!
I thought that I recognised one of the actors in it - he played Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman.
Just downloaded Bullet Boy and Adulthood.

Actually, I have two unlimited cinema passes, even though I'm sure that one would be sufficient. UGC charges something like 20.50€ a month, and Gaumont-Pathé charges 19.80€. With either pass you can go to any cinema of those chains at will, but on top of that about 90% of the independent cinemas in France accept one or both of the passes. There are a few rare independent places that don't accept the passes but which give a discount if you have one of them.
Meanwhile, there are a few other chains in provincial cities that are not part of the programme, since they assume that if they have a megaplex with 15-20 screens, that is enough (and of course they have other discount schemes for people who need to see lots of movies).
In Paris, the scheme is perfect for me, because the normal price of a cinema ticket is about 10€, and I see about 10 films a month -- and about 95% of the cinemas in Paris accept my card. One of the cards is even valid if I go to Belgium.

I just saw "Prometheus", the Ridley Scott "Aliens" prequel. I thought the plot was "Alien" redux, though there's an attempt to get deeper and more mystical regarding the origins of human life - i.e., Is there a God? Or are we the product of proto-human alien barf? Other than that, there's the icy android, the strong female character, some carnivoristic tentacled aliens, and the aforementioned proto-human, who is not exactly benevolent towards his descendants or by-products, whatever humans actually are to him. The sets are great, special effects are great, acting is good, and one scene in particular that made me squint my eyes almost shut.

Sounds like a deal, MrK...
Strange that we see the same film and I called it a touch of Kak at #124 and you found it as good as you said...I venture that you don't read previous posts, Trentt?
Charlize Theron was ok but sooooo much better in Monster. It looked like they chucked one helluva Budget at the film and didn't really know what to do with all that money!
I always get Tony and Ridley Scott mixed up - not anymore...

TinMan - I didn't watch it with great expectations. The narrative style was odd and they didn't fill in every plot hole as Yanks are wont to demand. I was entertained by the aliens and the gruesome c-section scene and the rather spectacular crash at the end. As I mentioned before, I thought it was mostly a rehash of the "Aliens" plot though, and not nearly as good. Charlize Theron was an ornament, not much more.

I would also say that my cinema criteria are variable -- if I am expecting to see crap and the movie is something less than crap, I might say that it is good. If it is a film in which I had high hopes and it disappointed me, I might say that it was bad, even if it was better than 80% of the stuff out there.
For this reason, in real life, I am often extremely noncommital when people ask me about movies.

I watched "The Holy Mountain" which everyone describes as weird, and they are right. Talk about "Life - What's Your Take On It?" ... is it enlightenment and immortality? Or just finding a great bar? It is weird and disturbing, sometimes incomprehensible, but never dull.

I'm sure I posted a reply a day ago? Oh well...I'll try and recreate it.
I would hope that you didn't watch Prometheus with Great Expectations, Trentt - not a good Double Header for me, there!
Looks good, HT! I like a good horror story.
If I'd heard that a film was crap, Mr K, I wouldn't go and watch it.
Anyone seen Mad Buddies? Saffer Film that looks right up my street!

The Holy Mountain?
Never heard of it but what I have 'researched', "Forget about the war on drugs and the war on terror! It's about time someone declare a war on pretentiousness!" may well sum up my feelings on it!
I won't be setting the DVD to record it should it ever come on the TV...

Ok, I'm going to order" Dead Man's Shoes" as I've heard plenty good about it. I did see Sapphires and really liked it. (it's funny because I just saw The Commitments recently for the first time, laughed my ass off as the association was hysterical.) I love most Motown flicks.

I agree almost completely with Trentt's review of Prometheus. I went to it not knowing it was the prequel to Alien, and kept noticing similarities - I thought it was an homage to Alien, I guess.
LAst night I saw "The Hunger Games". Thought they did a decent job of it, got across the ideas in the book well - but it is a young adult book/movie so some of it is very predictable. Mr_Scrubb wasn't enthralled - though he did sit through the whole thing (at home) when he often shuts films off 1/2 way through to finish later.
Guess I'd give it 6/10, though if you liked the books you might find it a 7.

I assume that Scrub and Trentt have got a room by now?? (Old TT saying..)
So...You went to watch Prometheus 'not knowing' it was a prequel to the Alien/s films? I find that hard to believe!
It was not a 'Homage' to the Alien/s films...It was a Film trying to cash in on the Franchise - and it failed, badly.
Like Mad Max, Police Academy, Haloween, Friday the 13th, Death Wish etc etc....
Just know when to STOP making films about the same subject and trying to cash in!
Quxote? Great that you will see Dead Man's Shoes but.....It will all depend on whether you 'like stuff like that'...If you do? It will be a 9/10....if you hate it, then...maybe a 1/10....
(It's set in a village in Derbyshire, before you ask...)

TinMan - I only knew "Prometheus" was in any way related to "Alien" by checking on IMDB before downloading it to watch it. I hadn't heard of it, though I did read your post, but it didn't register until after I saw it that it was this film.
I haven't been to the cinema since 2000 so I myself don't keep track of what Hollywood is churning out. To me, Scrubb's statement is utterably plausible.
And we HAVE "gotten a room", thank you so much.
