A subject close to my heart, as you well know. I like the odd beer or glass of wine at the weekend, but I also love to talk about it and have learned a lot just by trying the things that other people have enjoyed.
Now I am not encouraging anyone to overdo things, but hey, lets talk!!!
On Saturday I had some wonderful Pinot Grigio. The sun was out here and it was a balmy 18C (if you could find a sheltered spot from the wind) so we had a BBQ for some friends and family. The wine was very fruity and very enjoyable. I often chose Pinot G as a picnic wine because it does not have to be "fridge cold" to be enjoyed.

Hmmm... due to financial reasons we have to stick to cheap box wine at the moment. Some of that stuff is not too bad though.

Pinot Grigio needs to be fridge cold here - we don't get much of it. There is wine estate that does lovely wines here and has a Pinot Grigio, unfortunately they are a pricey estate.
We are on the box stuff too at the moment. Although the other day the husband came home saying "F*** the recession, I've got Bombay Sapphire!"
My current wine favourites are Viognier and Pinot Noir both are far from ubiquitous here - a well known local wine estate produces the only reasonably priced Pinot Noir (most are too expensive) I've seen and while most shops stock their other varieties it is hard to find the PN.

Viognier is a commonly used variety down in the Herault where we are living. But from Tuesday we'll be living in the Lot. Cahors is the nearest wine area to us. In olden days they made a very dark wine that needed to be kept for years to mature. The money men said this was tying up their capital so a lot o the vines were grubbed up and quicker maturing varieties planted. Accountants know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

mmmmmmm wonderful deep red Cahors wines. I shall share with everyone that several years ago I enjoyed a holiday around 10 or so miles from where the Fazerie will be relocating to. It is merely coincidence that some of the best preserved Cro-Magnon Man artifacts are to be found nearby. Its a beautiful part of the world.

I love Viognier and Pinot Noir but have never seen any cheap stuff. They are supposed to be the two most difficult commonly cultivated grapes to grow and here in Portugal they are more or less (apart from a couple of noble exceptions) non existent.

I used to like Merlot best, but recenly I've liked my Cabernet.
