An unexpected discovery: Iranian ice-cream. It is simply delicious and my favourite local flavour is saffron ice-cream. I never thought it would taste so good!
Another discovery is a Isfahan speciality. A dessert that contains yoghurt, sugar, saffron and....beef. It did not sound appealing to me at all but tasted delicious.

Last year I discovered pomegranate molasses. We were staying in a pansiyon in Turkey and a bottle of their home made stuff was on the table. We put it over our salad. And back home I use it when baking duck or chicken thighs. Wonderful flavour.

I also have a bottle of pommegranate molasses on my kitchen counter and use it for different kind of things. Homemade pommegranate molasses must have been a real treat though.

I remember in the Philippines discovering kalamansi juice. It was wonderful. Mrs Faz and I used to mix it with rum. The rum was cheaper than the kalamansi juice so we were really saving money.

There is a show here called Kitchen Cabinet, where one of the political journalists (and avid home cook) turns up to a pollies house and the politician will cook a meal for her while she interviews them. I love it.
Anyway, last week the politician was Sam Dastyari, who has an Iranian background. The shop he visited to get the ingredients to make the traditional Iranian meal is one that is close to me but I'd sort of forgotten about it and haven't been in it for years and years. I think I need to go back and get some of the lovely food it stocks!

I have no idea why I held off for so long, but I finally bought and ate some Chinese 100-year eggs today. It was a real adventure. A little bit of fleur de sel was appropriate.

My husband loves it as well, cause it is all very similar to the Circassian dishes his grandmother used to cook.

oops! unless there's way too much cayenne, it should be a good stimulation for your digestive system.
