I think that what it might do to their loved ones will always be at the heart of any suicide. But I suspect that this sort of end to a life is easier for many relatives. Mental agony is hard for loved ones to understand. Physical agony or helplessness is easier for people to understand and empathise with. And few would want to force their loved one to go through that when they don't want to.

Agreed..
It comes down to such a personal level and everyone will and should make their own choice and, maybe, only the Relatives should attempt to sway their choice and actually put their point of view to them - like "we will never see you again; have you thought of that?"
If the individual has thought of that and still finds it the Right Way to proceed then so be it.

I'm 100% for euthanasia.
Having seen many terminally ill people being kept alive by all means and at the same time with restrictions on the amount of painkillers they can get (as doctors are afraid of being accused of helping if the dose was higher and the person died) it's just awful. Seeing people slowly drown as the oedema of near death occur, seeing people moan in pain but no more painkillers can be given. The pain and torment of the sick and family. It's just fucking cruel to not have the right to end it.
We would be accused of cruelty if we kept an animal alive under similar circumstances.
If legalised, of course it should be heavily regulated and following mental state assessment.

You must like Devonshire Fudge, Ria?.. Wino is correct about the swear words - and have a wild stab in the dark who is to blame for the Mods taking such draconian actions on Flushed that used to be 'Un Moderated'... I think that everyone is agreed that it is the individual's choice but if you go back to my OP you will see that it asked a question about a specific instance that happened recently that is contentious to say the least...
