Thank you to everyone.
It seems some of you wish to do something concrete to express sympathy. That is so kind. Suggestions include making donations to a children's charity where you live (mom was a big supporter of these) or to Save the Children is you want a quick idea.
She also supported food banks ... decades back she'd give time serving Thanksgiving dinners to the homeless/needy at milwaukee Rescue mission. The mission is faith-based though lacking in sanctimony & they do great work for the disenfranchised & disaster victims in that rather wretched city. You could also donate directly to them if you like.

Trentt - it's not exactly a Children's charity - but have made an extra donation to Medecins sans Frontiers in her name.

I donated to Save the Children - didn't see an option to say that it was meant as a tribute to your Mom, but it was.

I chose mercy Corps for no particular reason except it is helping Ukrainian citizens in lots of ways.
The visitation & service & burial & luncheon were all today so that is over. It was a mixed bag of torturous ordeal & pleasant surprises & catharsis. Grief is not over but now I will be able to carry on.

I think that funerals serve an important purpose, even when they are difficult. Glad that you feel some positives from it, and that you got a bit of closure.

Glad for pleasant surprises, trentt. hugs for the continuation. Agreeing with Scrubb: rituals do help and they serve an important purpose.

Although nothing like losing one's nearest and dearest, I am a little bit melancholy about losing a friendship that was very important to me for several decades. She's coming to town tomorrow, for a week, and I'll see her a few times and it will be pleasant. But that's all.
We met in 1983 and became very close over the next couple of years. We've been roommates, travel companions, and almost sisters. We haven't lived in the same place since about 1990 but we saw each other whenever we could. She is the only friend who came to visit me in Paris. Mr_S and I have stayed with her when we pass through her city. I went out to see her and meet the new baby after each of her 3 kids. Her annual summer visits to Saskatoon used to be a highlight and I spent practically the whole week with her, like I was part of her family (who live here, who she's visiting). We had long, introspective talks. We told each other our frustrations and problems, and felt safe that the other would keep our confidences, not judge, and try to support.
I miss that friendship.

I finally matched Sophie's donation and paid into Save the Children in the name of Trentt's mom.
the Save the Children International webpage, doesn't allow payments. it sends donors to their local page. So, it was paid into the Swiss account of Save the Children.
