Anybody read that article about the jetstream and its influence of our "stuck" weather? Yes, blocking is what the weather does from time to time but somethings have changed. First being the ability of the climate models to reproduce it. This had been a major criticism of some of the models. The second is the speculative part, has blocking become more common, and time will tell. As I recall it was blocking, a resident High over the UK that produced the Summer of 1976. It may have been blocking that produced the extremely cold Winter of 1962/3 but you would have to check as it could equally have been something else. Unfortunately the models seem doomed to play catch up at least for a while, and each time they do so, they reveal stuff that may or may not be the case. I think the article bears this point of view out. Perhaps we will get more blocking perhaps not. If we do there is I think a link to more exceptional patterns but the current weather and the current state of the models is a juxtaposition that may pass. A few years without singnificant blocking and it will all fade away. Unfortunately it will take a long time to show that any statistical relationship is likely to hold up in the long run. At the latitude of the UK that period is estimated, by some, to be measured in decadaes, 20+ years.

winter? what's winter?? Slow? what about the summer of 1984 - we had measurable rain in London for over 40 days - even St Swithin would have been amazed!

The orchids/irises are starting to flower, as are the fruit tres. After a few cool and windy days it is starting to get hot. All to son it will be very hot. Anything left in the sunshine is already a bit toasty, the car registered 35C on its thermometer thingy yesterday.

It actually is above freezing today … the average low for today is, um, freezing. It continues cold here. Yesterday's high was only 8F/4C below average, today's is more like 20F/11C below average. Rumors abound of sunshine and temperatures around 60F/16C coming up … after the weekend. And just for one day. Winter, loosen thy frozen grip!

Clear blue skies, sun warming everything (though there was a frost last night).

Wish it was over here. It's March and I wouldn't mind at all if it would start to get a bit warmer. It snowed again last night. Just a bit, but enough to cancel school for the entire county.

I know I shouldn't compare and I understand the reasons behind these... but these snow days really amuse me. It's nice and warmer outside than inside today.

Well, we had a nice hour out in the sunshine at the zoo. It really didn't feel like spring, though. The snow is only melting on the roads, not everywhere - nothing dripping off the roof or running in the gutters, and the air is still chilly. Sigh.
Still, much better than -36 like it was a week ago!

t'was much chillier again today. I'd like to find the English counterpart to the French "en avril ne te découvre pas d'un fil, en mai fais ce qu'il te plait". But I guess it doesn't exist as the seasons are rather different here.

I have an alternative (just to be provocative) reading of that:
Ne'er cast a clout Till May be out.
It could be: Until the may blossom be out.
May = hawthorn.
