Mapes, a couple of weeks ago in a thread I said I wanted to be like Annie when I was all growed up. So the mods made my post count equal to hers. So that means I am finally all growed up. Annie, that's great that you don't have to fly out of London to get to ... Newark.

last weekend we went to the hula valley hoping to see some stragglers migrating... saw a couple of flocks of storks on their winding ascent up a current... and in the marsh we saw a marsh hen... (we also went to a wine tasting, burp...)

(we also went to a wine tasting, burp...) Jeff, what is a marsh hen? This? Yesterday morning a Swainson's Thrush was singing in the tree over the driveway. . I couldn't see it, but it was really close and the song was gorgeous. I snuck away from work and spent the morning watching birds. A distant Cape May Warbler www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cape_May_Warbler/id was perhaps the bird of the morning.

yep... can't remember the difference between swamp and marsh anymore - and to make it even more confusing (to me) the staff called it a moorhen it's a waterbird usually seen floating but it was on the bank of the swamp and was most noticeable for its red beak and chicken feet...

Ah, Moorhen is a different species ("Moorhens, sometimes called marsh hens or river chickens") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorhen than the Purple Swamphen en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Swamphen which is in the video I just linked to. Moorhen is a corruption of Meerhen, meer being an English word for lake or a similar body of water. The Nerd Table is living up to its name, isn't it? Plus it's becoming the Bird Table at the moment. In the USA, swamp signifies a wetland dominated by woody plants, while a marsh is dominated by non-woody plants like reeds, rushes (genus Juncus which should become junco in Spanish), sedges, etc.

You're right about that, shrjeff. But one has long red legs and a blue body and the other one has shorter legs and is browner.

yes. i don't know what to say about birds. okay, here's my story: once in college in a natural history class we were out with our binoculars and my teacher asked us to identify a bird. i looked and then exclaimed, "that's a CUTE bird!" it was, too.
