I have never been ecstatic about visiting Malta. However it is the most vaccinated country in Europe and lets in visitors from Britain and I do need to get away this winter.
Tentative plan: Fly to Malta and spend 2 weeks in St Paul's Bay (buses from all over the island pass through so expeditions are no problem). Then fly to Sicily for a week (Mrs Faz has not seen Catania or Taormina). Fly back to Malta and then go to Gozo for a couple of weeks.
Anybody got any tips?

Loved it. I think my report is still here somewhere. Mrs Faz will have a splendid time taking photos. Will fish out some info and expand when I have a keyboard not a hunt and peck that auto corrects, incorrectly.
One tip. Get your foot better fast. The inner city is stunning but a lot of places have limited vehicles access.

Just looked at my old photos and found I was there late Dec-mid Jan in 2014. I stayed in an apartment in Valetta as coming from here I wished to really explore the historical areas and ambiance rather than beaches. The place had a stunning view, but all that glass made it impossible to heat and they hadn't tried. The photos have reminded me that it was actually colder than I had anticipated with a big drop at night. Might be a good idea to check heating options depending on where you are staying, and the cool wind for a few days required wearing a windbreaker and another light layer of clothing. Other days were stunning, but certainly not tropical. The old area was quite deserted most nights, limited dinner options so I normally had my main meal during the day and self catered at night. I found an online supermarket delivery which was helpful.
During my stay there was a major sandstorm. Interesting to watch, but the dust played havoc with my asthma.
Things will have changed, and found the bus service excellent but timings could be a bit erratic. Also got caught out with some of the places as I'm not used to siesta type closings and hadn't factored them in during my first foray into historical sites.
Gozo was lovely. Fortunately taken there by locals (an epat Kiwi I knew and his wife). Very quiet, very restful. We had a car so no idea of services available.
The food was excellent (well... except my cooking).

Thanks, Kus. Malta is small so I am minded to stay in St Paul's Bay. We can take the bus to Valletta easily. The apartment I have my eye on is directly on the water and it has heating (important as we'll be there mid-January). The bus stop is very close. And there are restaurants near by. We'll go to Gozo and rent an apartment in Victoria. Gozo is even smaller than Malta and has a reasonable bus service.

So you’re looking to go to Malta, Baz? I had some friends from there, lovely people. BTW, how do you make a Maltese cross? Poke him between the eyes! (Sorry, couldn’t resist that. Joke from my childhood) But I did have a Maltese cross in my teens. It was a pendant though.

One of our neighbours is from Malta. We are going to their house for dinner in a couple of weeks so I'll get some info from her.

Baz, we are thinking of going to Malta also in January. We must meet up. I have booked nothing yet but my plan is to fly to Malta on 17 Jan, stay for a fortnight in St Paul's Bay and then go to Sicily for a week. We'll return to Malta and then go to Gozo.
