My first zucchini is nearly ready to be harvested. And the swiss chard looks pretty good too ! I haven't got any tomatoes yet but lots of flowers. My tomatoes are always quite late, the last ones I usually harvest in November...

Our friend at Waitrose gave us a tomato plant which we are growing in a pot. We have just seen the first little green fruit. The English climate is not good for tomatoes but I guess these will ripen by the end of August.

The mange-tout peas are just coming good. We picked the first 2 this evening. Not much, you say and you are right. There will be many more. I also nipped off the tops of broad beans and some beetroot leaves and we added it all to tonight's stirfry.

I sowed a packet of wild rocket seeds. I haven't tried it yet but Mrs Faz had a leaf and says it is very powerful tasting.

Our little veggie plot is at last getting going. This was today's harvest, just enough to stirfry tonight.

And turkey is a strange one. The bird doesn't originate in Turkey. Nor, as the French have it dinde, does it come from India.

And barley sugar doesn't have barley (it's a corruption of the French sucre brulé).

I gathered some more rocket leaves for tonight's salad. And now a small confession. There is a row of raspberry plants next to our allotment that seems neglected - we are constantly pulling out weeds before they can seed. We have asked other allotmenteers about these raspberries and they all seem a bit nonplused. They seem to be on a bit of no-man's-land. Possibly they were planted by someone who has now left. It seems a shame to leave them to the birds so I have just picked the ripe ones for tonight. Don't tell anyone.

I don't think so, Annie. I don't even like frozen green beans. The texture seems wrong. I'll give some to our next door neighbour who has been passing punnets of strawberries over the wall.
