My first year in Germany and I asked Mrs M where I could get parsnips and swede. She said nowhere. Same thing, war and fed to animals. Eventually found some on a once a year specialist farmer's market.

When my cousin (now deceased) lived in Munich He went out into the country and rented a bit of land from a farmer so he could grow parsnips.

Last year when we sowed broad beans direct in the ground they were all eaten as soon as they came up. This year we have started them in pots on the dining room windowsill. 23 out of 24 have germinated. I have moved the pots outside onto our patio table. When they have grown a bit and look sturdy they'll go to their permanent position in the allotment.

someone mentioned that asparagus and parsnips were different... and in Germany they have something called "black roor" -- which is kinda like asparagus but different...

I don't know, staying with friends we had a rabbit cookoff ( my version and his ) and when I went to the market he told me to get black root -- I never heard another name for it. aha - I googled it - yep.

It could be salsify or scorzonera. I always think os salsify as having white skin and scorzonera as having black skin. In any case you don't eat the skin.

I'll have to look further as a quick look comes up with "black root" as a US/Canada traditional native medicine.
edited to add: a-ha! I looked for the german translation to black root and Baz is correct. Scorzonera.
People easily get confused between scorzonera and salsify.

When I lived in Hertfordshire I grew scorzonera. This past spring I sowed it twice and it didnt come up.
Wikipedia says it is native to southern Europe.

the german wikipedia article on schwarzwurzeln leads to an english one called scorzonera, and the one on scorzonera hispanica or black salsify leads to a german one titled garten-schwarzwurzel (garden black root). i like schwarzwurzel but rarely make it because it is so much work to prepare them ...

With the black-skinned scorzanero I found it best to boil it first and then the skin just slips off. The alternative is to use a potato peeler when it is raw. But this way you lose more flesh and also your fingers end up sticky.

Mrs Faz has taken over the allotment (I hope only temporarily). Last season the broad beans we sowed were all eaten as soon as they emerged from the ground. This year I have sown them in pots. They look sturdy so this afternoon Mrs Faz has planted them out. Now we must be patient for 7 months.

Apart from the fact it’s not real, did I miss something here? I wasn’t referring to alternative horticulture - I don’t live in Nimbin.

It's fake, that's what's wrong. It doesn't have weeds, it doesn't need cutting, birds can't dig for worms. It's like a wig. It's just not right.

The small back courtyard has concrete on the right hand side of the back glass sliding door and brickwork on the left hand side of that door. The fake grass lies over the concrete. I’m guessing it was done for astheatic reasons by the owner. The only bit of earth is a ten inch border along the back fence with grey and white stones.
And you’re wrong about the weeds, Baz. There’s a massive length of Kikuyu grass running underneath from the place behind and weeds growing vertically up out of that fake grass. I have no idea how any of this happened. Someone came and sprayed roundup on the weeds so hopefully this will get rid of it all.

I harvested the last of the basil off my plant and made a double batch of pesto. Mmmmm. Guess I can put the large pot outside for the rest of the winter and clear up space in the house.

I saw a flowering forsythia today. Yesterday I pruned the boxwood bush with the electric pruners. A bit heavy to use with one hand up high but worked better than expected. First time I’ve used one; it was left with the house when we moved in. I also pruned the roses (only two) and cut back all the dead branches from the bottlebrush bush from last year’s (yikes.. year and a half back) transplanting trauma. Daffodils are starting to come up.

It was not a harsh winter but there was a cold snap that killed our broad bean seedlings. This afternoon I have resowed them. They are in little pots on the windowsill in the dining room. Let's hope they germinate soon and grow well with the longer days.
