back to the mundane -- broccoli , yes, I used to grow it - and it does take some time to start.. then it goes gangbusters, takes a break in the summer heat, and starts up again as it gets cooler. ( after the big "head" it puts out lots of little ones on side branches) Come fall you can use Purple Sprouting - which we can't as our winters are too cold. I wonder if it's bit too warm for the broccoli at the moment. We have max temperatures of about 18C (54F)and lows are around 9C. I've read all about that first big head and how and when to harvest it to encourage all of the side shoots... but no sign of any broccoli head at the moment. Will keep my eyes peeled and hope it happens soon - I love broccoli and it's taking up so much space in my garden!!

Your link didn't work for me, pizzawheel. I was wondering whether it would- I linked a pic off FB as tinypic is such a bother on the phone. I'll try again if I get on the laptop later!

Fingers crossed that my broccoli gets a hurry on then.
I think your fb settings don't allow non-friends to see your photos, pizza. At least that is what I would assume.

That's my guess too Lumi. I'll put this down to a lazy Sunday morning post! Fingers crossed that my broccoli gets a hurry on then. I think your fb settings don't allow non-friends to see your photos, pizza. At least that is what I would assume.

We just went down the road to have a quick look at our allotment after being away for two and a half weeks. Disaster. Weeds were to be expected. But a lot of seeds I put in simply haven't germinated. There are great gaps where I sowed sweetcorn and dwarf beans. I'll now sow again in pot.

Our little allotment is looking a lot better. The weeds are much reduced though mysteriously new ones appear overnight. Yesterday I gave some water to our courgettes and beans. Today I had a look and I noticed the friend we share our little plot with has also watered his courgettes and beans. He must have the impression that I am an expert.

On Tuesday I watered my plot, and resigned myself to the knowledge that I was going to have to replant half the cucumbers, 1/3 of the peas, and all the beans. They just weren't going to grow.
On Friday I watered my plot, and found that pretty much every seed has germinated and jumped up - the beans, which weren't up at all Wed., have outgrown the peas that were up for several days before!
The only thing that hasn't made it this year is my basil, in a pot in my yard. Will have to find another one.

At last we have defeated the weeds in our veggie garden - well for a few days at least. The soil looks dry (though still damp underneath) and rain is forecast for Sunday so all will be well.

New basil plants seem to be doing well.
My wonderful friends who planted my seeds for me left a LOT of space between rows. So I just decided to fill it in a bit - will add a row of peas, and 2 rows of rocket.
Also going to put up the trellis for the peas.
ETA: it's all done! more peas in, the row of beans completed (i'd run out of seeds a couple feet early), and some rocket/arugela. Trellises up. about 5 or 6 of the tomatoes are already flowering, even though they're still really small.
We're having really sunny warm days, so hopefully the tomatoes are going to click into high speed and start really growing. They are all healthy looking, but not much bigger than when they went into the ground over 2 weeks ago.

I planted savoury the other day. I love that stuff ! What do you use it in? I had a really successful savoury plant a couple summers ago and most of it is still sitting (dried) in my cupboard because I don't really know what to use it in.

My grape (pinot gris) is going nuts at the moment- all power to it in defeating the creeper from next door!

Oh a lot of things, stews, anything with tomato sauce, soups and so on. It is a very nice herb.

I discovered 2 places with spittlebugs yesterday. I had no idea what is was (looked like foam!) so had to Google. Looks quite easy to get rid of thankfully.
On a positive note we had a massive amount of organic kale for our Dutch dinner last night and even have a lot of leftover kale to use (with more in the garden of course). Have ALOT of lambs lettuce and spinach to harvest today.

There's something about a freshly mown lawn that's great for sitting out on, especially on a lovely warm summers eve.

First produce from our veggie patch! Polish Maria sent (among other things) some radish seeds and I pulled some up this afternoon. It is always encouraging when something other than weeds flourishes.

Rikita, savoury is a herb..also called summer savoury. I haven't seen it used in Eastern European cooking, so it may not be used in your area either.

It's used in Mennonite soups, which has a strong Ukrainian influence, so I'm a bit surprised it's not in other Eastern European cooking. Although maybe putting it in the soups started after they came here?
