It can depend what country I am in. I go for that country's tipple - in Thailand Mekong whisky, in Greece ouzo, in Italy Campari, in Spain fino sherry, in South Africa brandy and ginger ale, in France pastis. A problem in the UK as I don't really go for gin or whisky. I have pastis (Ricard or 51) or maybe a brandyhattan (brandy and Italian vermouth).

In a bar in North America or England or Africa I will usually order a gin and tonic. Occasionally a Caesar (in Canada, that is).
However, in France and probably Italy I am more likely to have campari. And in tropical places, a mojito or occasionally a rum punch.

My go to spirit and mixer would be either Jack and Coke or gin and tonic. Cocktail - perhaps a caiphirina (sp?) or mojito.
