I wonder if it would not be wise to stop regular travel from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The American-Liberian who flew to Nigeria (apparently knowing he was sick and then infecting his doctor in Nigeria when he tried to escape the hospital after he was told his diagnosis) killed 5 people and infected over 10 others. Nigeria has traced and followed (and I think quarantined) 213 contacts from this one traveler. Yet we allow ins and outs to countries where the virus is out of control as if it was not happening. Is it worth it? abcnews.go.com/Health/us-hospitals-68-ebola-scares-cdc/story?id=25039023

More than you want to know about Ebola: Visit the Ebola Outbreak page on NEJM.org for new Perspective articles from the CDC’s Thomas Frieden, the WHO’s Margaret Chan, and more. The page also features a healthmap with cases of Ebola throughout the world. nej.md/YvUQzxv

Here is what WHO is saying about travel:
In the current outbreak, the majority of Ebola virus disease cases are a result of human-to-human transmission and failure to apply appropriate infection prevention and control measures in home care, some clinical settings, and in burial rituals. It is important to understand that EVD is not an airborne disease. Individuals may become infected as a result of contact with the bodily fluids (vomit, diarrhoea, sputum, blood, etc.) from persons who are confirmed to have EVD or who have died from EVD.
Companies bringing goods and services to the affected countries are at low risk for exposure to EVD and WHO, under the International Health Regulations, encourages companies and organizations to continue providing these necessary supplies.
Countries around the world continue to engage in active surveillance for cases of EVD. Reports have been received by WHO of suspected cases and systematic verification is underway in a number of countries to confirm whether these are actual EVD cases. Overall, these reports are a positive sign that surveillance is working and countries are stepping up their preparedness to respond. As of today, no cases have been confirmed outside Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, or Sierra Leone...
WHO does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions be applied except in cases where individuals have been confirmed or are suspected of being infected with EVD or where individuals have had contact with cases of EVD. (Contacts do not include properly-protected health-care workers and laboratory staff.)

Ebola has been confirmed in the Republic of Congo. Last week there was news of a hemorrhagic fever outbreak that killed at least 70 people. The WHO said it was not Ebola but a hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Today 2 of 8 samples tested by the Republic of Congo were reported positive for Ebola. The WHO is testing (again?) to confirm-new reports to come out Monday.
One of the samples tested was a different strain than the outbreak in Guinea/Liberia/Sierra Leone. The second sample was a mix of 2 different strains. Currently it is being maintained that the outbreak in the Republic of Congo is not related to the outbreak in Guinea/Liberia/Sierra Leone.
One British medical worker became infected in Sierra Leone and has been flown to London for treatment.

Yup it is very scary. I think my friend was quarantined and tested as it seemed to be about 3 days before him flying/arriving in UK and reuniting w/ the family - the UK ain't that big that it would take him 3 days to meet up with them!
They apparently been doing interview with BBC, but that is their thing, promotion of their trip so any angle!

The third patient in the US in Nebraska is being treated with another experimental drug, not Zmapp. They haven't released the name of the drug yet. This will be interesting to read more about. 4th patient will be flown into Atlanta tomorrow to the same clinic the first two patients went to.
A vaccine shows promise in monkeys.

As of August 28
The medical doctor from Senegal who has acquired an ebolavirus infection in Sierra Leone was transported to Germany yesterday /[27 Aug 2014] where he is currently being treated at the University Hospital in Hamburg. According to media reports and the treating physicians, he is in stable condition at the moment.
I have not seen more recent reports

Also a French nurse working with MSF has contracted ebola and is being evacuated to France.
The current tally of evacuations:
1 French nurse to go to France
2 US health care workers infected went to Emory in Atlanta and have recovered.
1 US health care worker was evacuated to Nebraska and is still hospitalized but said to be recovering.
1 health care worker currently being treated at Emory in Atlanta.
1 British nurse flown to England and has recovered.
1 health care worker hospitalized around Aug 27th in Germany is presumably still there-no news is leaking out. Unsure status.
1 priest flown to Spain and died shortly after arrival.
So to sum it up 8 people evacuated. 1 death 3 discharged 5 being treated
I read somewhere that there is currently only one private company in the US that has a plane equipped to do evacuations, not sure if this is true. Definitely a bottle neck for evacuations though.

The last exposed people in Nigeria are due to finish their 21 day period of observation on Oct 3rd. It is important to note the effort it took though-one sick patient entered the country. He infected 20 people. 8 died. Around 900 people were traced and quarantined/observed. Because one man evaded tracing and a physician was willing to cover up the fact that he was privately treating him ebola spread to a second city.

We will see how the US does with containment. This article has some more info. www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/10/01/texas-ebola-patient/16525649/For me as an ED doc it is really interesting to note where the system broke down in terms of identifying the patient when he presented to the hospital 2 days after becoming ill and was sent home. Per the news this is what happened: Sept 26th the patient presented to the hospital he is now hospitalized at. During triage the patient mentioned he had travelled from Liberia-he was asked for a social security number and didn't have one and mentioned he had been to Liberia. This information was not conveyed to the treating medical staff and the patient was treated and sent home to his sister with antibiotics. I have not seen any detailed info yet on how many people are being contact traced. The CDC is being closed mouthed about it which I don't feel is helpful. What we do know is that some children were exposed, the medical staff was exposed, the family at home was exposed.

More detail on the US patient here: www.nytimes.com/2014/10/02/world/africa/ebola-victim-texas-thomas-eric-duncan.html?_r=0Apparently he carried someone who was suspected to have ebola a few days prior to departure and lived in the same house. Which raises the question: If you know you've been exposed and are starting to get ill, why would you not self-identify? Why do you take 2 days to seek care and then not very specifically tell medical personnel you've had direct contact with someone who died from ebola recently? Carrying someone with ebola without protective gear seems like a no brainer in terms of knowing you've been exposed. Sigh. Any thoughts on this?

I guess a lot of Liberians don't believe in the illness being contaigous, they think it's either white people threatening them or it is coming from the demons... I heard some freaky stories about this. that's why some people escaped from isolation. They don't believe the virus story!
