Hamburg*
*the cradle of British Rock
------
a bit hard to follow, what with having to keep looking up words such as gougers, coshes, garotters; and never having actually heard of most of the bands, singers, managers.
The cover and info was very interesting, and the book was on sale, a few dollars. A bit of a triangle, from Jerry Lee Lewis to Merseybeat. A fairly brutal, behind the scenes account.
Think I´ll put it in the give away stack, once I read it.

"A sometimes frank look at how some of the greatest rock idols from the uk cut ttheir teeth in live performance. Hamburg a city trying to rebel it's gloomy past. Sex drugs and rock and roll was on the menu - a taste of what could be for some and of what was to come for others."
Looks like Adam Clayson wrote that review himself!
Apart from The Beatles; anyone else even heard of Hamburg as regards the Music Scene?
I know that loads of Punk bands played there but what do you really expect back in 1977?

No, I hadn´t, which was why I was curious. I´m surprised at the connections. I will finish it soon, but it´s a lot of time looking up people, bands...
It is is interesting though--I had not realized what a huge influence Hamburg was.
The "Rock" category of "music" now seems more close to what I grew up calling "alternative". Rock to me was Malmsteen, ACDC, Alice Cooper. I smiled on the bus at some teenagers talking about music, how it sucks now...how they love the old stuff....

It's not a fucking 'huge influence' though, is it!
If the Punk scene was so 'big' there, how come the the most famous Hamburg Punk Band is called Slime and no one has heard of the Fuckers..eh?

no, the influence, I gather, is more of the general cultural and openness of being in Hamburg, which was a huge influence on the Beatles (not really my cup of tea, but beside the point), and others. Not a music expert, so obviously I hadn´t heard of most in the book, as I said,)
Shame Sutcliffe died of a brain aneurysm (apparently from a Mersyside incident a year before where he´d not gotten medical attention after being throw against a wall, depending on which story is true), as he was a truly imho amazing painter.

was kidding btw. That "yeah you want another beer" was a line in a movie I was watching as I was typing. Totally random line. Though way more obscure than the other line you rightly got.
