The results are quite special, because the winner, Angela Merkel's conservative CDU/CSU, is also the loser because the party may win, but the coalition partner FDP dropped out of parliament (didn't make the 5 percent hurdle), so the government loses its support. There is a progressive majority, so that the three smallest factions in parliament could form a government together, but they appear to hate each others' guts, so it's no can do.
And then there's the anti euro party AfD which appears to miss its entrance in parliament by a few votes only.

It's a good thing that the FDP is out and even better that the AfD didn't make it's entry. I already cast my vote during the summer vacation but it was not easy this time to make a decision. It's been a real dilemma 'vote or not vote' cause it was just all crap.

Being left wing myself I don't regret the disappearence of FDP. At the same time in Holland we have issues with an extreme-right party that could become the largest - FDP is very nice and friendly in comparison. Are AfD such bad guys? Not sure... I'm not particularly fond of the euro myself, so they may have a point. It is not quite clear to me where they stand on other issues, but I don't think they are really extreme right, are they?

Which Dutch party are you talking about? Partij voor de Vrijheid? I'm still hoping that Geert will disappear. A friend of mine and I used to say if Rita Verdonk becomes prime minister we'll leave the country. We've both moved without that happening but Wilders seems a lot worse than Verdonk.
As far as I understood it the AfD is not extreme but I'm a bit suspicious. They seem conservative, opposing same-sex marrriage, want to reform the immigration system. But I live in the U.S. and am not totally up-to-date on the new political trends and parties.

Yes, I am talking about PVV. Got big spouting insults at migrants, then they switched to being mainly anti-Europa (though still islamophobe), recently they've gone full anti-muslim mode once again. At the discussion about the budget for next year, four PVV members wore the NSB flag on their sleeves - the Dutch flag with orange instead of red, that apparently was the orginal Dutch flag back in 15something, and that in the past century has only been used by the national-socialist NSB in the 1930s. Recently, neonazi groups such as Stormfront are seen with that flag - and now also PVV.
There is one big difference between NSB and PVV: NSB was terrified of Jews. PVV loves Jews (they are funded by American zionist organizations). They found a new minority to hate.

I've missed that whole part about PVV members wearing NSB flags and all the rest you mentioned. It's a bit worrisome though that they seem to gain popularity (again? still?) and I never understood how people can fall for the cheap rhetoric Wilders uses. Each time I hear it I just want to barf & the few times I watched him 'debating' in parliament....oh dear, he behaves like 7th grader trying to piss off his teachers. Really weird. In the "groene Amsterdammer" there was a interesting article about how his Indonesian roots contribute to his political thoughts. Quite decent analysis imho.

A few weeks ago there were 2 demonstrations against government policies. A left wing one in Amsterdam and an (extreme) rightwing one, organized by PVV, in The Hague. These lovely scenes could be seen in The Hague: Wilders did not comment about it. He simply said thank you to everybody. A week later four of his party members (eh, he has no party members. He himself is the only member. I should say: four members of his fraction) turned up in parliament like this: There was news about it two days later, but no national scandal. Of course, it's just a flag - but the meaning of it is really obvious.

If it wasn't national (big) news then I got why I missed that. Nevertheless disturbing and one more reason for me to vote in the Dutch elections next year.
