A poll of Times readers asked if choosing Liz Truss as PM was the right decision. 87% said No.

We'll have a new prime minister later this morning when Liz Truss "kisses hands" with the Queen. This is the official name for the ceremony though no kisses and no hands are involved. Liz Truss has been chosen by party members though adding the members who voted for Sunak to the number who didn't vote she has not got a majority even there.

There is a Test match on - that is cricket. It can go on for 5 days. The first day has been entirely lost to rain. There has been discussion about what to do if Her Maj dies overnight. I suspect the cricket will be abandoned. They can't add on days at the end as several players are flying away to play in other cricket matches.

Apparently this 5 day cricket match is being reduced to 3 days.
I remember waiting at Gatwick airport where a cricket match was being shown on TV. I tried to explain the basics of the game to some Americans. It was not a meeting of minds. You mean that sometimes it goes on for 5 full days and there is no result? Yes. What are they doing now? Why are they walking off the field? They are going to have tea. You're kidding.

The basilica in DF (Guadeloupe) is quite something. I was there years ago just before the pope (John Paul) was there. It was sparkling clean and so full of flowers everywhere.

slow the guadalupe in mexico city Guadalupe is to the east of here. All other Guadalupe towns, shrines, and and associated miracles stem from this original. Mary, depicted as a black Madonna (above), is the patrona of Extremadura. The statue, now mostly hidden, is attributed to the craftsmanship of Luke the Evangelist so it should be a good likeness of Mary.

We are not republicans but we do find the overwhelming fixation n the Queen's death too much. It reminds me a bit about Thailand. We were having dinner in a restaurant and couldn't order a beer. Why not? It is the queen's birthday. And going to the bus station in Chiang Mai to catch an 8 am bus. But at 8 am precisely the national anthem played and everybody stood and faced the portrait of the king so in fact it was the 08.02 bus we caught.

There was something on the news about a game I know little of: Squid Game. Unfathomably I looked it up. It turns out to be a drama show. I read a bit about it and am puzzled. So, should anyone have seen it, can they explain: Why, in the drama, does the Squid Game exist; what purpose does it serve, how is it financed?
Whilst reading about it I assumed that it was a satire of a reality show, e.g. internal to the drama, the game had a live audience and made money; but it appears not. Pity, a satire on people's voyeuristic appetites is a worthy notion. Then it occurred to me that the act of real people watching the show could in itself be satirical.
Both were true of the 1968 satire " The Year of the Sex Olympics", At a base level a voyeuristic drama about voyeuristic TV. All done in a format that mocked more than one reality show yet to be. If anyone wants to see a timely warning of the future of mass audience TV; you can find it on DailyMotion.

This evening and tomorrow we are "enjoying" the Mop Fair in Chipping Sodbury. When we first came here 8 years ago we had no idea what a Mop Fair was. It used to be a traditional fair with food and drink stalls. Men and women would wander around holding a symbol of their trade: for instance, a maid would hold a mop, a farm worker would hold some wheat stalks, a forester would hold a branch. Then employers would size them up and they would seal their employment for the coming year with a drink.
None of that happens now. But there is still a Mop Fair. The food stalls have continued there but it is now a fun fair with rides for kids, a dodg'em (aka bumpercar) rink, a "rocket ride" that shoots you skyward (a sign reads - Ride Here, Know Fear). A stage will have singers. One of the pubs has a hog roast outside its doors. There are coconut shies and kiddies' lucky dips.
Obviously the High Street is closed to traffic. There are signs up warning about this as you come into town. Of course there are drivers who feel this doesn't apply to them so they come driving down our street which in 50 metres of our house turns into the High Street. They seem perplexed and possibly outraged to find a barrier to stop them.
Because of Covid there hasn't been a Mop Fair for the last couple of years. Expect a bumper year.

We'll be staying in a guesthouse actually built over the Chao Praya. It began as a restaurant for locals about 25 years ago and then added rooms. It is just upstream from the tourist areas. In fact a review posted by an American girl said she was scared walking to it. It is wonderful having a meal at night (the food is excellent) and watching the dinner cruises coming up the river and then turning round just opposite us and going back.

Mrs Faz had a message this morning while we were shopping in Waitrose: a youngster in Australia had gone into hospital. No point in sending a card as she'll be out before the card wings its way there. But Mrs Faz thought quickly. She went to the shelf where cards we displayed, selected a Get Well card, photographed it on her phone - and sent it off. Problem solved.

Today and tomorrow it is the Mop Fair in Chipping Sodbury. This began a couple of centuries ago. Once in autumn and once in spring there was a job fair in the High Street. If you were looking for a job you carried a symbol of your trade. So a farm worker would carry a few wheat stalks, a forester would carry a branch, a maid would carry a mop. Their potential bosses would interview them and then the deal would be sealed over drinks. The job market has withered away and it has just turned into a fun fair. The High Street is closed to traffic and huge fun fair machines appear over Thursday night. The pubs (we have 7 in the town centre) do a roaring trade. There are singers, whole roast hogs, dodgems (bumper cars) and lads eyeing the lasses. It hinishes at 10 pm on Saturday. When I fetch the paper on Sunday morning everything has gone. You'd never know the Mop Fair was there - except the street has been swept cleaner than it will be until next autumn.
