The Queen of Holland finally retired and her son took over. I've been watching live and while it's entertaining I can't help thinking that monarchy is just soooo yesterday. Plus, the past months the Dutch have been agonizing over a financial crisis but now fork out shit loads of money for these people.
What you think? Yay for a Queen/King or is it just hopelessly out-dated?

When did vast personal wealth go out of fashion? I think the monarchy and similar forms are very much today and soooooooo tomorrow.
In the UK you have to understand that we are talking about a concept called "The Crown".
If we reversed the settlement under which the Crown is administered to the benefit of the Treasury and the monarchy pensioned, the monarchy would have a revenue that has been estimated to be around ~£500m/annum and of course a private estate of immense size.
The Crown represents wealth beyond the comprehension of most.
The Crown is deeply embedded in English and Welsh law and the notion, at least, might have to remain for a long time to come.
We did once try a Republic but it was really bad and hugely unpopular.
When the Queen dies, something will change in the nature of monarchy, particularly the notion of the Crown Imperial. The old King was monarch to about 30% of the world's population, now it is really only the UK and the Dominions, and I expect that the Dominions will be also go their own way.
But the evidence for the notion that power over the masses be personified by or actually held by a very small group of hugely wealthy individuals is all around us.

Monarchy is outdated and needs to be phased out, though I realize it would be difficult.

Oligarchy is on the rise quite generally and democracy on the retreat, worrying about monarchy is a bit of a side issue, IMO.
Should the English monarchy be freed of its commitments it would I think be a far greater power in this land.

Good point about the oligarchy, also something which I personally oppose. The Netherlands once were a republic, before they became a monarchy so I have more hope. Even though yesterday it didn't look like at all as if there was some disagreement. Prince Claus, the late husband of princess Beatrix once said in an interview that people should be glad that monarchy is hereditary cause if it wasn't it'd quickly die out - cause the lifestyle is not fun at all. He was known to have struggled with his life as a royal and he also never hid it.

God save our gracious Queen Long live our noble Queen God save the Queen Send her victorious Happy and glorious Long to reign over us God save the Queen
O Lord our God arise Scatter her enemies And make them fall Confound their politics Frustrate their knavish tricks On Thee our hopes we fix God save us all
Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour Long may she reign May she defend our laws And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice God save the Queen
Not in this land alone But be God's mercies known From shore to shore Lord make the nations see That men should brothers be And form one family The wide world over From every latent foe From the assassins blow God save the Queen O'er her thine arm extend For Britain's sake defend Our mother, prince, and friend......
God.... save.... the... Queen !

The thing is, apart from England and a tad of Spain, Portugal and Italy, no other Fucker took the massive hassle and expense to try and work out just exactly what was out there, in this Big Wide World of ours..
The Seppos and Crims can STFU at this point..
England just Explored, Colonised and treated the locals with Respect...and the Locals learnt from God's Country...
Hence we have the World we have today!
Monarchy and Royalty are just part of History - if you have one....
