Where in Chile is this? I'm trying to figure out destinations for next year's vacation :-D Visiting penguin family? ;D It is the Humboldt Penguin Reserve in Chile's 3rd & 4th regions. It is kind of a pain to get to independently, so we did a tour from La Serena that took us to two of the Islands, Isla Choros and Isla Damas. You drive about 120 km to Punta de Choros and then take a boat to the islands.

These are Humboldt penguins. What kind do you have there? There are also Magallanes penguins that are found around ChiloƩ and further south that look very similar.

Gringa I had no idea that the penguins were quite that far North. I was expecting them to be way down South from there.

I was surprised when I found this out too, iain. This was probably around 550 km to the north of Santiago. They have them farther north in Chile as well. I am pretty sure there are some on the Peruvian coast too, I will have to double check my bird book to confirm.

I had penguins swimming past me on the galapogas islands, so they do travel a bit cute pics!

Those are cute too, MissA.
We saw a lot of them swimming in the water on the way to the island, but it was hard to get a picture.
Mr gringa is taking the last week of January off, and it looks like we will be heading to ChiloƩ, so I will get to see more penguins there.
