It was about time. Now the problem is finding a replacement given that the team and the national association are quite a mess. No more guatón parrillero!

Claudio Borghi released after an unsuccessful struggle to improve the program.
The head coach of Chile’s national soccer team, Claudio Borghi, was fired Wednesday following a series of losses and the team’s diminishing quality of performance. The Board of Chile’s National Association of Professional Soccer (ANFP) released Borghi in an effort to improve the program and ensure the team’s qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

“We are convinced that Chile has a generation of high-level players who should lead us to participate in the next World Cup,” the board said in a statement Wednesday. “Our commitment is to continue working hard to achieve this objective, which is what all of Chile expects.”
Borghi was let go after the team’s poor performance in a friendly match against Serbia on Wednesday, a defeat preceded by three consecutive losses against Colombia, Ecuador and Argentina that caused Chile to fall outside of FIFA’s top 20. Borghi, who replaced former head coach Marcelo Bielsa in February 2011, has been under the watchful eye of ANFP board members in recent weeks due to the team’s poor performance.
While the coach received the ANFP’s continued support in October, the positive vibes that broke through after a tough loss against Argentina were quickly extinguished.
“The way they played today makes us think that Argentina was a ray of light, and that makes us uneasy,” ANFP President Sergio Jadue told local press. “We hope that this decision is best for Chilean soccer.”
After rumors of his alleged resignation surfaced last month, Borghi again reiterated the fact that he was not stepping down from his position on his own accord.
“They asked me to take a step back,” Borghi told local press. “I was fired, I did not quit.”
According to the ANFP, the search for Borghi’s replacement will begin immediately since the board hopes to install a new head coach as soon as possible. Jadue said no conversations have taken place with prospective coaches, but the committee hopes to find someone capable of “recovering the joy” of the national team.
“It will be someone with sporting successes, someone who knows the way,” Jadue said. “Someone who presents a rich game with promise in both offense and defense.”
While no official names have been released, it is rumored that the ANFP will choose from two high-profile coaches: current Universidad de Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli and former coach of the Paraguayan national team Gerardo Martino. However, ANFP Vice President Cristian Varela told local press that no possible replacement should be ruled out.
