I'm leaving sunny Portugal tomorrow for a weekend in Stockholm, work unfortunately as we have to attend an exhibition there all day Saturday and Sunday (yawn) but Mrs. H is coming with me to help out and we have our evenings free from 5pm. Anyone have any good insider tips? We're looking for good but not expensive places to eat and maybe some nice bars.

We went a few weeks ago and it is an expensive place. If you want to avoid expense go teetotal for the weekend! My eyes nearly popped out my head and I live in London... Despite the astronomical booze prices I loved the place, really loved it. Have you been there before? I really recommend an evening walk inthe old part - Gamla Stan and just seeing what bars you come across there. Its a cool city and there are lots of cool places to try out. We didn't eat here because we were really busy but it had been recommended by many different people and apparently does traditional Swedish food very well and not expensive by Stockholm standards. I will go to Stockholm again and I will eat Byf Rydberg here! www.restaurangprinsen.com/eng/We did eat here. It doesn't meet your criteria of inexpensive but was very special so in case you can't resist... www.gyldenefreden.se/The Operakallen had lots of restaurants and bars, mostly expensive but they have a little bar with traditional Swedish food, its called Bakfickan or "The Hip Pocket" which is inexpensive and special, its very casual you eat sitting at the bar. www.eng.operakallaren.se/page.asp?pageID=1198The hotdogs on the street are special, we ate far too many And if you have a chance to go on a boat in the evening to see the archipelago they usually have a bar on board and it is very beautiful Can you tell I fel in love with the place?!

Off home now, but does Mrs H have the days to herself?
If she does and wants some ideas of things to do in the day I will write more when home.

are you staying over for Monday? I totally totally recommend both the Ship museum AND the historical village - that has historic houses from all over Sweden --of course right now I'm drawing a blank on both of their names. and I loved staying in the old jail that has been made into a hotel/hostel - very reasonable too.

the wasa boat? this is the one that was designed as a single decker, but double deckers became the 'in' thing and the king demanded it also be one... so it floated out into the harbor and immediately turned tail up (or down - can't remember which) and sank... you can't fool mother nature

Thanks also Voy for the tips but we are leaving tomorrow and have no time to even see the city. After a cheap meal last night we have decided to treat ourselves tonight though. tried to book into Glyndede Freden as recommended by Tilly but is was full but we managed to get a table at Berns Asiatika which is meant to be great. Will report tomorrow.
Amazing weather here, warm and sunny and everyone sitting outside in the sun!

Back in warm and sunny Portugal now after the weekend in Stockholm and a couple of days in the UK visiting family. Berns Asiatika is a great place in Stockholm and not too expensive either.
