But everyone starts celebrating today. Flags are everywhere. Some of the taxis even have huge red, white, and green sombreros on their roofs.

I'm going to a Grita party overlooking the zocalo and all the festivities. Perfect place for watching the astonishing fireworks. I especially like the cascade of fire from the top of the catedral.
The party is in a hotel room with balconies overlooking both the zocalo and the catedral. I'll be able to lounge on a bed and indulge in hors d 'ouvres and fake champagne. I am soo decadent.

WOW!
Just returned from el centro. That was a blast. We went up on the roof of the hotel to watch the fireworks, so were directly below them as they exploded in the sky. I don't think I've ever seen so many of those giant starbursts or whatever they're called. Can't remember the music that the band played during the explosions, but it was all so surreal. I felt kinda like I was on drugs and hallucinating. Beautiful, incredibly beautiful.
Maybe next year I'll feel up to really doing it on some little something or other to enhance the moment...if it can be enhanced. I could beg a little smoke from Charliedawg.
The food everyone brought was delish. A few things.....empanadas de flor de calabasa y champinones (squash flower and mushroom empanadas,) a yummy hummus w wonderful pita chips , crudites of course, b-b-q chicken, tamales de chipil, a potato torte to die for, pico de gallo, various dips, fruit, brownies, and I can't remember the rest. Oh, mucho mescal. Oaxaca is the home of mescal.
VIVA MEXICO! VIVA! VIVA!

Well, all you have to do is use some air miles. You have a nice place to stay and it won't cost you a penny. I don't cook, tho.

It's Friday here. Flags are here everywhere too. I bought some Chilean flag bandanas for the dogs and took them for a walk today with them on. They caused quite a sensation.
Here typical foods are barbecue and empanadas. Chicha is a popular drink (a type of grape cider). It is also a time to dance cueca, the national folkloric dance.

Gringa, I've terrible at world history. American history, too. Is it Chilean Independence too?
I woke up at 9:30 this a.m. to those loud 'bombs' and the umpah band. Ah, another parade going by the house. This one, the small pueblo parade. Almost everyone here was marching. Even the ancient witch who lives behind my house.
I gotta get a photo of her for y'all. She's bent halfway to the ground, walks with two crooked sticks, always has a bandan or hat on her head, and a perpetual, toothless grin. The old gal is amazing, tho. Can barely shuffle along, but, damn, she wound up the parade up and down our hills. I went out to salute her when she got home. She just cackled.

Yeah, September 18th. 2010, next year is the Bicentennial.
Then there was the 11th, the anniversary of the coup, which always ends in a lot of stupid violence perpetrated by people that weren't even alive in 1973.
