It is our medical practice that has put me forward for this. They take a sample of my spit and analyse it to discover where my antecedents came from. How they do this I don't know. I was born in South Africa. My father was born in Lancashire, England. I don't know where his antecedents came from. My mother was born in South Africa but both her parents were born in England.
I have been mistaken for German (whatever that means - I look nothing like Goering) so I shall be intrigued if I find that my genetic make-up includes 4% Egyptian. I shall claim Cleopatra as a distant forbear and all Potters must grovel when in my presence.

Baz, in the Pot Family Photos is a little about my ancestry and my DNA results. Don't know if you've seen it.

It looks from the photographic evidence as if one branch of your family was French. But the DNA doesn't really back that up.
I have sent off my saliva sample. Spitting and spitting it took a couple of minutes to provide the sample. On the other hand, even with Mrs Faz helping it too about 20 minutes to follow the appalling instructions about the packaging.

The regions shown are quite large but the graphic shown is just an overview. When I access the information, because it is my information, I can zoom in and find the specific regions where the DNA is from - this is all dependent on the data the company already has access to from previous tests. I can't access Mrs M's data by the way unless she gives me her access details. In effect the more tests the company does the more accurate is the data and that is why I've delayed doing this for many years. I suppose the first few who ever did had scant data because they were the first.
An example is the area classed as Iberian. It does cover southern France where I know my French ancestors come from, from generations back until the early 20th century. Mixed in with that in another area are overlaps with Italy and Greece. I do have a long, long, list of people who I share DNA with and the areas they live in. None of them are outside any of the areas marked but on first look until I went further into the information they gave me, it did all look a bit vague.

I've not bothered with the DNA analysis to determine my ancestry - both sides of my family are well known back many years. But recently I realized it would be interesting to get the information on relatives still living in places like Norway, Switzerland, Wales, Scotland, etc.

I wish we did!

Nets. There are companies who do this. Ancestry dot com is one and it's international. I have a number of both friends and acquaintances who have done the tests, often with surprising results.

You would struggle to overestimate my antagonism. To my mind, it is not a neutral endeavour.
N.B.
Ancestry is the LDS.
And this type of DNA analysis is a technology that would have given Eugen Fischer (a tragic case of nominative determinism) wet dreams.
