It is time to book our long winter holiday. In Jan/Feb we are going to Lecce in the heel of the boot of Italy. Lecce in a beautiful small city with a lot of interesting towns nearby. We are renting an apartment in a converted palazzo in the historical centre but down a quiet side street.

Oh, I think I know people from Lecce. They live here, though

I have just booked our accommocation. It is an apartment in part of a beautiful 17th century palazzo in the historic centre. Because it is winter it is half price.

We are spending 3 nights in Rome before taking the train to Lecce. I have booked the accommodation but for some reason I cannot print out the confirmation.

We went to Sorrento for two weeks in summer every year when I was a child. Loved being in the water in the paddle boats! Until I found I was doing all the paddling and dad wasn’t!

We'll be travelling Rome to Lecce. Any tips on using Italiarail? I am amazed that the five and a half hour journey only costs £14.

Baz, I can tell you two things about Italian trains.
1. The Thello sleeper train has the narrowest bunks. (The Thello sleeper train from Paris to Venice was suspended in 2020 and has now been permanently discontinued. Can’t say I’m surprised!)
2. Some of the filthiest trains in the world are your Italian trains. Even economy and cattle class in Vietnamese trains are better!

The “frecche” trains are very good. The local trains much less so. You can obtain assistance. You can book it and they are very good. Parents of a friend of mine have tried the system to go to their holiday home in what was the village they grew up in. It worked well.
