There’s even a World Toilet Day! My father did some of his best thinking on the toilet. And how do I know this, you ask? Because he always had his latest book with him and he came out smiling.

When I lived in Canada we rented a log cabin for a couple of months in the summer. It had a long-drop toilet outside. On the door was nailed a sign: Sometimes I sits and thinks, sometimes I just sits.

I have the door of mine bungeed open, so when I sit there, instead of reading I can look at the lake!

was it bear safe, baz, that long-drop toilet? It was. But I went out one day berry-picking in the woods with my mother. We came across a huge clump of mixed raspberries, blackberries and thimbleberries. We went separate ways round the clump. My mother decided we had enough berries and called out to me that we were going. I didn't reply. She called out again and said I was going to be in trouble if I didn't come at once. Still I said nothing. So she came round the clump wondering what punishment I was going to be given and found it wasn't me she had been calling out to but a bear.

I think all mothers react in the same way: 1. Worried about her child. 2. Angry at the bear. 3. Anger switching to her child for getting in the situation.

My mother dropped out of school after 8th grade. Her mother had died, she was the eldest daughter left at home, so had to act as mom to her little sisters. This meant she had to take her youngest sister (age 3) to school with her since no one was at home to look after her.
One day they were walking home after school and a bear emerged from the woods and stood looking at them. Terrified, my mom's little sister said "Is it a bear??" My mother replied, "No, that's a rabbit."

I love co-incidences - I'm reading a book about the Coastwatchers and it turns out yesterday was the anniversary of the day MacArthur declared that the Battle of Bougainville was won .
