Turkeys have a large area and move, en masse, around it during the year. I used to get them twice a year at the farm. edited to add: they basically can't fly - watching them try to get airborne is hilarious. So they don't migrate , but forage all winter on berries and nuts - also if they can find them, grasshoppers and worms and spiders.

Do they stay in Maine during the winter or do they roam slightly further south? (I am asking about their large territory)

I think they stay here -- large territory is probably a couple of square miles, but I really don't know. And right now don't have time to call the AgExtension to find out - to say nothing of the fact that they aren't open yet !
