I think this was the only day of the year my father really loved having become a citizen - he was a fireworks freak ! When he got mad at Mummy or me he called us "Colonials" ...

And today is an anniversary of the founding of the NHS, and here is a little story that links the two, a day when a medical unit of the USAF led the recovery at the scene of the Harrow & Wealdstone train crash (1952), the UK's worst peacetime rail disaster (112 dead, 340 injured). In particular the role of Lt Abbie Sweetwine of the 494th Medical Group. In total around 100 US medical staff attended. Their response to this disaster was instrumental to the creation of a paramedic service in the UK. History Remembers Lt Abbie Sweetwine, “The Angel of Platform 6” (United States Air Force) THE ANGEL OF PLATFORM 6 - LT. ABBIE SWEETWINE (UK College of Paramedics) And as she was on the day: Important history is too soon to be forgotten.

It is a story that simply makes me cry
A boy who had been at school close by on hearing the fog muffled crash went to the station to look for his father, a member of the platform staff. He wasn't to be found. It seems likely that he went into shock, (he was also injured), and he had walked away, not to be seen again for some considerable time, (more than a day). It is possible that he had suffered amnesia (fugue), or alternatively gone on a bender to drown the horror. I met the father when the son married a cousin of mine and came to live with his mother in law, my aunt.
