Yesterday, I watched news of a building fire in central Sydney, Australia with equal parts horror and fascination. Thankfully, it was an abandoned building. Today, it transpires that school children were playing in it (they escaped). They said 13 out of the 15 known homeless people to regularly take shelter in it were unharmed. They had not, at the time of reporting, been able to contact the other two. Let's hope they weren't in the building.
What makes us so fascinated by such events?

For any interested parties and fire watchers, here is an update on the fire in Surry Hills yesterday. Bit of use/less/ful info: Surry Hills Sydney, was known as a slum area. Surrey Hills, Melbourne was/is a salubrious suburb with leafy streets and wide roads. Surry Hills fire update

I helped a friend fix up a house he bought when Surry Hills was gentrifying in the mid ;60s -- I take it the gentrification didn't take? or that it's been long enough that it reslumified?

From what they say in the video in the OP and from a cousin who worked in the area in the late seventies, it was an area with "heritage" buildings and lots of narrow streets. apparently right by Sydney central train station.

yeah, I was thinking of asking the rains drowning northern Italy to go and extinguish Alberta's fires. but I'm not in charge of the weather.

A week ago we, this province, had a fire burn across about 300 sq km to our north in the sierras of Las Hurdes. About 40% of that area being devastated.

slow, we didn't hear anything about it here. was it one of those set up deliberately by some? We have fires every year, this one happened a little earlier than expected If we aren't burning, Portugal is, the smoke comes over their mountains to us. Mountains sounds a bit grand but they are a bit big for hills. A few years back we had a small one within walking distance, as they say; not that one would want to test that claim at the time.
